Job Description Summary
The Emergency Communications Supervisor is a highly skilled public safety operational expert who is passionate about supporting the organization's line level staff through caring, compassionate, and consistent leadership. The Emergency Communications Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the communications center and the performance of Emergency Communications Specialists, Emergency Communications Call Takers, and Guard Terminal Specialists.

Job Description
Managing Operations - 50%
  • Functions as an operational subject matter expert.
  • Manages all aspects of scheduling for line level staff including leave requests, on-call, and overtime.
  • Ensures the center is always sufficiently staffed and adjusts as needed to account for scheduled and unscheduled absences.
  • Maintains a functional skillset on all console positions and works console positions as needed to maintain minimum staffing and handle fluctuations in workload.
  • Maintains constant room awareness and takes command responsibility over critical incidents assisting as needed to facilitate the most efficient response.
  • Ensures equipment and systems are operational. Performs first line troubleshooting of equipment and software issues and reports technical repairs.
  • Identifies opportunities for continual improvement to achieve performance standards.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization’s service to its customers by offering suggestions to improve processes and procedures.
  • Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints including the preparation of necessary written documentation.
  • Assists with a variety of administrative tasks as required.
  • Works varying schedules.
  • Must maintain reliable and predictable attendance during scheduled work hours.
  • Must maintain on-call availability and the ability to report within 2 hours of being called in during scheduled on- call hours.
Supervising Employees - 40%
  • Completes all administrative tasks associated with managing direct reports.
  • Resolves problems, mediate conflicts encountered during daily operations, determines appropriate solutions, and promotes teamwork.
  • Engages in regular communication with and informs staff of relevant issues that impact on the organization.
  • Encourages and guides staff toward operational goals and assist staff to achieve performance standards.
Other Duties as Assigned - 10%
  • Assist with a variety of administrative tasks as required.
  • Work varying schedules including on-call and mandated shifts.
  • Maintain reliable and predictable attendance during scheduled work hours.
  • Maintain on-call availability and the ability to report within 2 hours of being called in during scheduled on-call hours.
  • Apply the highest principles of customer service in all interactions to represent the organization with empathy, integrity, and respect.

Required Qualifications
Required Education
  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent and
Experience Qualifications
  • 2 years Experience as an Emergency Communications Specialist.
Preferred Experience
  • 1 year or more of experience managing employees.
Skills and Abilities
  • Internal candidates must have a minimum of a “satisfactory” rating in every category of most recent performance evaluation.
  • High emotional intelligence and excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish rapport and build strong professional relationships.
  • Strong knowledge of modern public safety communications principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Candidate must pass a background check prior to employment start date.
  • Candidate must pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date.
  • Fully trained for internal candidates.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver License, Valid and in State Candidate must possess a driver’s license by the employment start date and maintain a valid license for the duration of employment. Required.
This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay.
