Teacher - Elementary Special Education Affective Needs 
 
Terms of Employment
Full-time, 187 days (Depending on start date).  Salary is based on education and experience and will be prorated per our Certified Salary Schedule not to exceed letter I ($50,000-$79,770). 
The District provides its employees with a comprehensive benefits program including medical, life, and dental insurance. The District provides three medical plans for which it pays the full premium for employees, and a fourth option is a buy-up plan for which the district pays the majority of the premium. In addition, the District pays the full employee premium for dental insurance and life insurance. The District contributes to PERA on each employee's behalf and offers additional retirement savings options as well as optional supplemental insurance. Employees also receive paid time off. Worker’s compensation and unemployment insurance are provided in accordance with State law.
 
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal and/or Director of Special Education or designee.  The teacher is responsible for the academic and social/emotional/behavioral instruction in a center based classroom with children who have behavioral challenges/disabilities.
 
Essential Functions
  • Able to communicate effectively with the principal, staff, students and families of Milliken Elementary School.
  • Able to work with the teaching staff, and administration in promoting the educational development of each student’s total educational experience. 
  • Prepares lessons in advance for all assigned classes; provides written lesson plans to the principal upon request. 
  • Modifies and adjusts curriculum to meet remedial and/or enrichment needs of students; coordinates curriculum with regular education teachers as needed. 
  • Demonstrates effective use of paraprofessionals in the classroom, including a coordinated team approach to meet the unique needs of students and to manage classroom behaviors. 
  • Maintains classroom management techniques to ensure the safety and security of students and staff. 
  • Provides support and instruction for students across settings in areas that include but are not limited to behavioral intervention, guidance and emotional support, development of life skills and academics. 
  • Collaborates/communicates effectively and consistently with all members of school based multidisciplinary team on a regular basis. 
  • Works with School Psychologist and/or Director of Special Education to implement IEP process. 
  • Attends IEP meetings, completes testing, and participates in the IEP process in conjunction with state and federal requirements. Communicates IEP goals and objectives with regular education teachers and other education staff; tracks progress. Completes all IEP documents as directed by the special education department.
  • Keeps accurate and timely student records, completes Quarterly Academic Progress Reports within prescribed time lines. 
  • Maintains a professional relationship with parents and guardians of the students. 
  • Maintains behavior charting systems to monitor student behavior change. 
  • Assists with developing and implementing behavior intervention plans. 
  • Maintains up to date certification in CPI.
Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Director of Special Education.

Confidential Information
  • Staff members shall not access, receive, transmit or retransmit material regarding students, parents/guardians or district employees that is protected by confidentiality laws.
  • If material is not legally protected but is of a confidential or sensitive nature, great care shall be taken to ensure that only those with a “need to know” are allowed access to the material.
  • Staff members shall handle all employee, student, and district records in accordance with applicable district policies.
  • Staff members who intentionally disclose student records, other confidential student information and/or district information may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
Equipment
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must understand IDEA and ECEA rules and expectations.
Ability to implement behavior plans, progress monitor IEP goals, and collaborate with other members of the IEP team.
 
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Works in standard office and school building environments.
 
Qualifications Profile
  Certification/License
  • Colorado State Certification as a Teacher endorsed in Special Education Generalist or Special Education – Severe Needs – Affective or show highly qualified status.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation. 
Education
  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
Experience
Successful prior teaching experience is preferred but not required.
 
FLSA Status:       Exempt
