The middle school learning specialist is responsible for supporting students with mild to moderate learning differences in acquiring the executive, study, and self-advocacy skills necessary to be independent learners in Wesleyan’s academically rigorous environment. In addition to providing small group, one-on-one, and in-class support, the learning specialist may occasionally teach large group executive skills lessons to an entire grade level or middle school division. The learning specialist will also be responsible for collaborating with the general classroom teachers to provide guidance in supporting students and appropriately applying Wesleyan’s accommodations. To facilitate a team approach, the learning specialist will effectively communicate and attend meetings with administration, faculty, and parents on the students’ needs. Additionally, the middle school learning specialist will assist in providing ongoing professional development to the staff on best practices for intervention and differentiated instructional strategies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide small group, one-on-one, and in-class support to students with learning differences.
- Plan and implement small and whole group lessons for remediation of executive function challenges and large group presentations for grade level and division based on areas of need.
- Implement use of best practices for differentiated and multi-sensory instruction.
- Promote and teach self-awareness and appropriate self-advocacy skills.
- Collaborate with faculty, administration, and counselors on supporting students with learning differences.
- Administer and interpret academic benchmark and progress monitoring assessments.
- Appropriately apply Wesleyan’s academic accommodations to ensure student growth and independence.
- Collect data to create intervention plans and track student progress.
- Proactively communicate with parents, including planning and facilitating parent conferences.
- Provide informal and formal professional development to faculty on best practices for instructing students with learning differences.
- Participate in events, some occasionally after school, to promote a sense of community among parents of students with learning differences.
- Seek ongoing professional development in the area of academic support.
- Participate in faculty duties such as lunch, carpool, recess, and retreats.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education (master’s degree preferred).
- Previous experience instructing students with learning differences.
- Proficient use of technology and educational apps to support student learning.
