What are the responsibilities and job description for the Digital Asset Coordinator position at Wesleyan University?

The Digital Asset Coordinator oversees preservation-level digitization operations in the Wesleyan University Library. Reporting to the Head of Digital Initiatives, and working closely with the Visual Resources Curator and Metadata Specialist, the Digital Asset Coordinator (DAC) is responsible for performing, supervising, and managing vendor-provided projects that involve photography and complex scanning of rare and unique materials as well as materials for pedagogical use. This position collaborates with colleagues from across the library, especially those in Unique Collections and the Davison Art Collection, to support digital production, use, and management, ensures that digital files meet national standards for digitization of cultural heritage materials, and updates processes as necessary to reflect those standards.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinates digitization requests and ongoing projects for Digital Initiatives, including communication with constituents about the status of the work.

  • Serves as a consultant and provides support for digitization projects originating in library departments like Unique Collections, the Davison Art Collection, as well as with faculty and student groups outside of the library.

  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Digital Lab, including hiring and supervision of student employees.

  • Performs digitization, post-processing, and quality control for a range of material types.

  • Updates, documents, and enacts efficient digital production workflows that support the creation of digital objects conforming to national standards.

  • Prepares materials for ingest for a variety of platforms in use at the library, including Islandora, JSTOR Forum, and Brightcove; and deposits files in the preservation storage system. This also includes maintaining image file management, ensuring that all files are accurately named and consistent throughout various platforms.

  • Facilitates the process for outsourced digitization including requesting quotes from vendors, as well as preparation, shipping, and receiving of materials.

  • Provides support on use of images produced and managed by Digital Initiatives to facilitate incorporation into teaching and publication.

  • Stays up to date on trends in the field of digital capture and preservation, and seeks to apply continuous improvement to Digital Initiatives workflows and processes.

  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

This position is required to work on campus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years’ related experience with digitization for preservation or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Demonstrable understanding of still image capture, including knowledge of digitization standards and best practices for digitization of a variety of analog mediums.

  • Experience using and supporting digital imaging equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify quality issues with digitized and born-digital image files.

  • Experience in color calibration of monitors, building color profiles, objective and subjective quality control assessments, and performing color correction and image manipulation using standard digital-imaging software.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects, plan and execute workflows, track progress, and meet deadlines and objectives.

  • Self-directed with a proven ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new software, technologies, and technical standards.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using and supporting medium format cameras.

  • Strong eye for color, value, composition, and visual accuracy.

  • Working knowledge of best practices in digitization for cultural heritage materials.

  • Experience with Golden Thread software in a production environment.

  • Experience handling fragile or rare material.

  • Experience working with and managing student workers in a college setting.

  • Experience digitizing 3-D objects to digital preservation standards.

  • Experience with project management software. (i.e. Trello, Asana, etc.)
