General Description
Develop, implement, and collaborate transition services focused on special education students' social, intellectual, and vocational growth. Fosters and maintains person-centered, community-based learning and employment opportunities for students transitioning out of educational settings and/or young adults receiving services from the Office of Rehabilitation Services. Strong communication and organizational skills, along with experience in employment coaching and career planning are of paramount importance in this role.
Essential Functions are the minimum requirements of the position:
- Conduct comprehensive person-centered analysis of the person's history, interviews with family, and staff, observing the person performing work skills and career research in order to determine the person's career interests, talents, skills, support needs and needs for potential accommodations.
- Collaborate with community businesses to develop and coordinate paid and unpaid work experiences for students and adults with disabilities; observation of person and assessment of the student's interpersonal skills, work behaviors and vocational skills related to employment position.
- Coordinate, implement, coach and assess students' vocational skills, interests and abilities through job observations, job shadowing, tours of various work environments, and work experience activities for discovery and assessment.
- To remain present and in direct sight line with students at all times during support shifts. At no time, are students to be left unattended.
- Facilitate conversation between students and employees at various job sites to develop natural supports, interpersonal skills and to learn about various types of skills required to be offered employment in a given field.
- Provide training and assistance on locating and reading job descriptions, encouraging participation in the career exploration process, and identifying labor market trends.
- Assist students in developing and improving communication skills for the workplace, requesting assistance, maintaining professional relationships, problem-solving, workplace etiquette, active listening and understanding the work culture through experiential learning in the community.
- Proactively assist students to learn, identify and communicate core job competencies required for various vocational areas of interest, align the student's actual performance to that of a skilled worker within that field, and implement a person-centered plan to develop the necessary skills for employment.
- Provides job development and job coaching services to students with disabilities using a person-centered approach with focused intent and respect.
- Assist the student with understanding a career ladder and assist with developing a career plan for future personal and vocational growth.
- Job development: promoting the program to new employers, advocating for the student supported and the agency, as well as assisting with resume writing and interviewing.
- Job coaching: learning and teaching a wide variety of job tasks, serving as an advocate and liaison between the school and the student as well as the employer and the student, assessing the student's needs on the job site as they arise and assisting with implementing strategies to resolve needs or issues.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge in evaluation/assessment of hard and soft employment skills and employment readiness, as well as identification of appropriate accommodations and/or natural supports
- Strong interpersonal skills in professional and effective communication with students, families, school personnel, school contractors (SLP, PT, OT, BA), employer outreach/partnership, and other agencies/community partners.
- Proven successful ability to provide one-on-one, goal-oriented, individualized job coaching and job development.
- Ability to detail quality documentation promptly for mandatory ORS and school services reporting.
- Ability to take initiative, be proactive, and work independently, as well as part of a team.
General Requirements
Bachelor's or Associate's Degree preferred in special education, psychology or a related field-minimum of a High school diploma or GED. ACRE Certification or equivalent preferred. Minimum one year relevant experience supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Valid driver's license, vehicle inspection, registration and insurance.
