Job Overview
The CDL Class A Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a winch slick or slickback truck to transport equipment and materials to and from job sites. This role requires a thorough understanding of state and federal transportation regulations, expertise in operating specialized equipment, and a commitment to safety and customer service. Drivers must be able to handle oversized or heavy loads and navigate challenging routes and work environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate winch slick or slickback trucks to load, transport, and unload heavy equipment and materials.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with DOT and FMCSA regulations.
- Secure loads using winches, chains, straps, and other load-securing tools to prevent shifting or damage during transit.
- Safely navigate equipment in and out of confined or uneven workspaces, including construction sites, rural roads, and restricted routes.
- Communicate with dispatch, supervisors, and customers to coordinate load pickups and deliveries.
- Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations, including Hours of Service (HOS) requirements and load permitting guidelines.
- Maintain accurate driver logs, vehicle inspection reports, and other required documentation.
- Assist with loading and unloading when necessary, including the use of winches and other rigging equipment.
- Perform basic vehicle maintenance, such as checking fluids, tires, and lights, and report any mechanical issues promptly.
- Adhere to all company safety policies and guidelines to minimize risk during operations.
Essential Job Functions
- Bending, Twisting, and Lifting: Regularly bend, twist, and lift up to 50 pounds to secure loads and operate equipment.
- Manual Handling of Equipment: Safely operate winches, chains, and straps, requiring strength, coordination, and attention to detail.
- Climbing and Heights: Climb onto trailers, trucks, and equipment to secure loads and maintain safety at elevated positions.
- Prolonged Sitting: Drive for extended periods while maintaining focus and awareness of road conditions and load security.
- Environmental Adaptability: Work in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and precipitation, while adhering to safety protocols.
Qualifications
- CDL License: Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Experience: At least 2 years of experience operating winch trucks or similar heavy haul equipment preferred.
- Knowledge of Regulations: Strong understanding of DOT, FMCSA, and state-specific regulations for heavy haul transportation.
- Skills:
- Proficient in winch operation and load-securing techniques.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to read maps and navigate routes with oversized load restrictions.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to bend, twist, climb, and work at heights.
- Stamina for extended driving periods and physically demanding tasks.
Work Schedule
This position requires flexibility, including overnight travel, weekend work, and extended trips to accommodate business needs.
