Purpose Statement: The Middle Level Campus Counselor plays a crucial role in fostering academic achievement, personal development, and career readiness among students in grades 6-8. This position is dedicated to supporting students in navigating their educational journey and preparing them for future success.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Washington State Counselor’s Certification. (ESA: School Counseling)
- Experience in master scheduling, student placement, and data management systems.
- Strong collaborative skills, adept at working in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience with middle school students and familiarity with PBIS and IDEA compliance.
- Ability to engage with diverse student populations and support non-traditional learners.
- Bilingual
Essential Functions:
- Collaborate with school administration and teaching staff to develop and implement master schedules, student placements, and academic interventions.
- Utilize WSIPC/Skyward computerized student data systems for registration, scheduling, and grading.
- Provide individual and group counseling to address academic, social, and emotional needs of students.
- Aid in conducting and coordinating 504 plan evaluations in compliance with IDEA regulations.
- Facilitate conflict resolution and mediation between students, parents, and staff to support student success.
- Develop and implement career guidance activities aligned with state CTE frameworks and educational goals.
- Support students in developing High School and Beyond Plans through individualized counseling and career exploration activities.
- Collaborate with community partners and industry professionals to provide job shadowing, apprenticeship, and career exploration opportunities.
- Aid in organizing and leading school-wide events such as college fairs, career nights, and academic planning sessions.
- Maintain accurate student records and documentation, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with district policies.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and stay current with educational trends and best practices.
Working Relationships:
The Junior High Counselor regularly communicates with students, parents/guardians, and school staff. This role requires sensitivity to a wide range of student needs and effective collaboration with colleagues. Work in partnership with both large and small groups of teachers and other professional staff. Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and teaching staff. Team up with grade-level colleagues to plan lessons, analyze student data, and maintain a focus on continuous improvement. Cooperate with the building administrator in the observation and evaluation process. When working with instructional paraprofessionals, provide appropriate lesson plans and activity supervision. May deal with a wide range of student abilities and behaviors; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.
Working Conditions:
Work is primarily performed in a school environment with occasional outdoor and non-routine duties. May involve physical activities such as walking, lifting, and supervision of students. The job incumbent is often required to stand or sit for prolonged periods, be exposed to a computer display terminal for prolonged periods, and meet externally imposed and inflexible deadlines. May be required to work outdoors in inclement weather; lift, move, and position students and equipment; supervise students, bus loading/unloading; attend to students’ personal hygiene; may be required to deal with distraught, angry, or hostile individuals; may need to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids and cleaning or disinfecting compounds; required to work in non-routine positions for extended periods.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assist in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job related is performed under a generally hazard-free environment and in a clean atmosphere
