POSITION TITLE: SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL NURSE – TO BE CALLED AS NEEDED.

LOCATION: BROOKE COUNTY SCHOOLS

QUALIFICATIONS: Baccalaureate Science in Nursing Degree (B.S.N.) from an accredited nursing program with West Virginia State license to practice as a Registered Nurse. Three (3) years experience as a Registered Nurse and Basic Life Support Instructor. School Nurse certification as required by the West Virginia Department of Education.
REPORTS TO: Nurse Coordinator, and School Principal, or designee as assigned by the Superintendent.

JOB GOAL: To implement approved total health program at the local school level and collaborate with principals and teachers in providing health education for students.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Plans for school health services at the local school level to meet the particular health needs of students in that school.
• Assess and evaluate the total health and developmental status of students.
• Provides specialized healthcare services to students as needed (i.e., suctioning and catheterization).
• Plans and works cooperatively to train teachers, students, parents and instructional aides in healthcare services and specialized care.
• Delivers school health services at the local level.
• Collaborates with principals and teachers to provide health education at the local level.
• Utilizes community healthcare resources in providing school health services for assigned schools.
• Complies with health and screening regulations as mandated by West Virginia State Law.

• Documents health information for appropriate school personnel and healthcare agencies.
• Provides statistical health information for school health program.
• Implements a follow-up program to assure correction of remedial health problems.
• Assess immunization status of children entering a West Virginia school for the first time and provide information for a report to the West Virginia State Health Department Vaccination Control Division.
• Identifies and reports student at high risk for health problems.
• Provides emergency care and first aid to injured and ill students and school personnel; maintains and replenishes health supplies.

• Counsels with students and parents, confers with teachers and other school personnel to share and interpret student health problems.
• Follows up on all abnormalities found, assists parents by referring to appropriate healthcare providers.

• Controls communicable diseases by observing signs and symptoms and providing follow-up measures. Tuberculin testing of all school personnel biannually and all kindergarten and new students annually.
• Records all health information on permanent record cards; compiles health statistics for monthly and annual reports.
• Assists in special medical clinics.
• Follows up on all accident reports of students submitted by the principals.
• Provides pre-enrollment screening for kindergarten students.
• Utilizes self-appraisal for the improvement of administrative skills.
• Demonstrates unbiased attitudes in fulfilling administrative responsibilities.

Performs other assignments related to the job as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.




Employment Term: 200 days
Salary: In accordance with the Brooke County Teacher's Salary Schedule
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Brooke County Board of Education Policy of Evaluation of Professional Personnel


Salary based on experience and education level per CBOE salary schedule plus competitive benefits
package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.
