- Interpreting & Content Creation
- Develop and teach ASL classes virtually and/or in person.
- Maintain online resources for 24/7 ASL content access, ensuring links are active and reliable.
- Work collaboratively with WVOCDB Director to coordinate WVOCDB interpreting services, offerings, and resources.
- Interpret at trainings, meetings, and workshops as assigned by supervisor.
- Mentorship & Training
- Mentor educational interpreters and sign language specialists statewide.
- Proctor and assess ASL skills using tools such as EIPA and SLPI.
- Provide workshops/trainings that provided CEUs.
- Collaboration
- Partner with stakeholders, agencies, and NTID on assessments and communication-related initiatives.
- Provide direct student services to LEAs as by immediate supervisor.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Document progress and maintain data per Office of Special Education standards.
- Professional Development & Participation
- Attend required meetings and adhere to personnel policies.
- Assessment
- Ability to assess individuals using the Northern Signs Expressive and Receptive assessment
- Ability to proctor the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA): Written and Performance
- Ability to assess individuals using the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI)
- Other Duties
- Carry out additional tasks assigned by leadership (Superintendent and direct supervisor).
- Must possess a valid recognized certification through Registry of Interpreters (RID), NIC preferred.
- EIPA Score of 4.0 or above.
- Experience in both educational and community interpreting.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel statewide.
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate.
- Knowledge of WV Board of Education’s Policy 2419 and WV educational interpreter guidelines.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of special education including IEP Plans and 504 Plans.
- Knowledgeable of all nationally recognized American Sign Language skill measurements and able to compare and contrast the nuances of each assessment type.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Ability to travel weekly statewide as work schedule entails.
- Effectively communicate and write professional correspondence.
- Ability to teach in person and virtual classes on ASL related topics
- Complete all other duties as assigned.
- The staff member will be expected to work onsite at the WVSDB for some assignments on a monthly basis (specific day(s) will at the Superintendent and/or supervisor’s discretion).
- The staff member must complete all required annual trainings.

The Coordinator for American Sign Language (ASL) Communication provides direct in-person and virtual ASL interpreting and interpreting support services to Local Educational Agencies (LEAs), families and/or various other stakeholders served by WVSDB as assigned. This coordinator’s specialized role includes but is not limited to the following:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EXPECTATIONS:
EMPLOYMENT RELATIONSHIP:
WVSDB staff are employed upon the recommendation of the school’s superintendent to the West Virginia Board of Education and are state employees. No representative or employee of the state is authorized to enter into any employment contract or other agreement. Designated employees paid under WVDE guidelines are “at-will” and subject to termination by the State Superintendent of Schools at any time, with or without notice, cause or compensation. Coordinators are paid under the WVDE compensation schedule and are deemed “at will” employees.
The employment relationship between the WVSDB/WVBE and the employee may be terminated by either party. Reasons for termination by the WVSDB/WVDE include, but are not limited to, immorality, incompetency, cruelty, insubordination, intemperance, willful neglect of duty, unsatisfactory performance, the conviction of a felony or a guilty plea or a plea of no contest to a felony charge, misuse of funds or property, violations of law or policies of the state board, lack of need, or a lack or loss of funding.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Requires extensive travel, with the ability to work in person and virtually. May require attendance at after-school, weekend, and evening meetings and events.
COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:
Based on WVDE Salary Schedule Program Specialist level, 261-day annual contract.
