The Transportation Geographic Information Systems Technician Trainee is regarded as a beginning trainee level of the GISTECH title series, wherein an employee, under direct supervision, is oriented to Geographic Information System (GIS) work and may be trained to perform duties through on-the-job experience. This position involves training-level technical work in multi-tier Geographic Information System (GIS) operations and services for a state agency or department. Duties include digital data entry and maintenance, executing applications, and producing maps and related graphic output and reports. Detailed guidelines with specific instruction are given to the employee to successfully complete a given task. Varying from these guidelines requires permission from the supervisor. Complexity involves steps, processes, and methods that are related within the job duties. Performs related work as required.Pay Grade: 11
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a major in geography, cartography, geology, natural or earth sciences, environmental sciences, landscape architecture, urban planning, land surveying, environmental engineering, computer science, or a related field with six (6) semester hours in computer science, computer mapping, or computer aided drafting and design (CADD) or GIS.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Performs low to mid-level GIS operations including manual data entry (e.g. digitizing, scanning, keyboard entry, etc.)• Produces plots and maps, does low-level GIS analysis, generates reports, and answers requests• Assists with GIS hardware and software operations such as setup and updates, installation and test, networking and peripheral device connectivity• Maintains technical equipment, assists employees with technical issues• The personal contacts are with individuals or groups from outside the employing agency in a moderately unstructured setting• Established rules, regulations, and procedures will be used to solve a variety of routine problems and answer a variety of standard questions. The work product or service affects the design or operation of systems, programs, or equipment.• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
