Wildlife/Little River WMA/Pocahontas County This position is under supervision of the District Wildlife Biologist and the Assistant District Wildlife Biologist. The Wildlife Resource Specialist is responsible for wildlife and habitat management activities on Little River Wildlife Management Area (*WMA) and Seneca State Forest. In addition, this position will assist *with the implementation of wildlife programs in an 8 county district in central and eastern West Virginia.
Duties of the Wildlife Resource Specialist include, but are not limited, to the following: develop and implement habitat management plans for assigned areas; maintain public use areas on assigned areas; collect a wide variety of biological data from various game species; provide technical wildlife and habitat management assistance to landowners; maintain headquarters buildings and storage buildings; coordinate with Division of Forestry staff to design and implement commercial timber sales on assigned State Forest; operate and maintain farm equipment; complete various reports and management plans; conduct public relations regarding areas of assignment and regulations; coordinate with the US Forest Service regarding habitat management and implementation of such actions on their lands.
Additional responsibilities include: assist with wildlife surveys and research projects that include but are not limited to, the use of radio telemetry, capture equipment, and immobilizing drugs; investigate nuisance bear and diseased wildlife complaints and provide wildlife damage control or technical assistance in removing or controlling the offending animal; possess good written and verbal communication skills; ability to perform public speaking; possess a working knowledge of forest game management; wildlife opening management, and silvicultural techniques. The employee will be required to attend agency and professional meetings, training, research, and other activities that will require overnight travel.
The employee must possess a valid driver's license. Work is performed outdoors in varying conditions, over difficult terrain, and/or state waters. Work is completed independently; therefore, the employee must be self-motivated and resourceful. The employee may be required to be a Special Natural Resources Police Officer on their assigned WMAs and enforce state rules, laws, and regulations and must pass a law enforcement background check. The employee will perform other duties as assigned.
Training: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in fish/wildlife management and biology, natural resources management, fish culture, agriculture, biological sciences, environmental sciences, conservation biology, or a
related field.
AND
Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in the field of wildlife management or a related field.
Promotional Only: Associate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the fields listed above and four (*4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid work experience in the field of wildlife management or *a related field.
Other Information
Preference will be given to applicants with a B.S. degree in wildlife management, wildlife, biology, or natural resources management; experience with forest management, prescribed fire, food plot management, and early successional habitat management; experience working with and handling game species (I.E., conducting necropsies, field research); experience with farm equipment operation and maintenance through temporary, seasonal, full-time work or other background experience; the ability to operate vehicles, trailers, chainsaws, and other tools; the ability to drive 4-wheel drive vehicles and farm equipment; and those familiar with trapping equipment, firearms, prescribed fire, land management for wildlife.
