What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coder position at Westborough Behavioral Healthcare Hospital?
Under supervision, the coder is responsible for correct and timely coding of all medical records utilizing appropriate systems.
Schedule: This is a per diem position requiring work on an as-needed basis.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze patient records for documented support of discharge diagnoses
- Notifies and follows through with missing documentation to support discharge diagnoses
- Creates appropriate and timely physician queries to clarify diagnosis ambiguities
- Enters diagnostic and procedure codes based on medical record documentation. Applies all codes according to established coding guidelines with an accuracy rate equal to or greater than 95%
- Assembles, analyzes and codes IOP/PHP charts
- Corrects and notifies appropriate departments regarding any material coding changes from reviews and/or audits
- Locates, reviews and scans charts for coding audits
- Runs missing chart report and notifies appropriate personnel. Follows through and investigates missing charts
- Performs final check for quantitative analysis
- Abstracts data from patient charts for quality and quantitative audits
- Manages daily workload and consistently finishes on a daily basis. Keeps up with workload during high census periods, and participates in special projects during low census periods
- Assists with departmental necessities at the request of the director or CFO. This may include following up with providers, following up on ROI, and communications with the courts.
- Performs related duties, as requested.

- High School degree or equivalent.
- Associate Degree specifically in HIT/M preferred.
- Must possess a deep knowledge and understanding of psychiatric medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology.
- 1 year of coding experience and/or behavioral health experience preferred
- CCS, CPC, RHIA and/or RHIT; must be 21 years of age; have a current negative TB test or medical clearance.
