What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Accountant position at Westby Cooperative Creamery?
Position Summary:
The Staff Accountant provides support to help manage a diverse set of Accounting tasks involving Financial Analysis, Cost Accounting, Inventory Management, Accounts Receivable/Billing, Accounts Payable, Sales Orders and Purchase Orders. This is a hybrid position, combining on-premise and remote scheduling allowing employee flexibility while meeting the needs of the Westby Cooperative Creamery.
Responsibilities:
- Performs financial and accounting work including the maintenance & review of financial records; prepares various quarterly and annually financial reports.
- Reviews and analyzes revenue and expenditures reports monthly.
- Produces ad hoc financial and accounting reports as needed.
- Performs financial analyses as requested.
- Performs month end functions timely and accurately, including assisting with preparation/review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial & management reports.
- Prepares bank reconciliations.
- Oversees new vendor (AP) and customer (AR) set up and compliance within Great Plains and DSI.
- Fully maintains the Accounts Payable system including processing of invoices, creation of payable schedule and processing of checks.
- Coordinates monthly product pricing.
- Estimates costs for new products.
- Coordinates the annual processing of 1099s.
- Assists with annual external audits by ensuring supporting schedules and necessary documentation is prepared and reconciled on a timely basis.
- Assists in preparation of annual operating budgets and performs periodic variance analysis to actual results.
- Assists with the development, documentation and implementation of effective internal and financial system controls, policies, and procedures.
- Assists with the development of document data flow, record maintenance and filing protocol.
- Coordinates various accounting-related projects as assigned by Controller.
- Cross-trains and performs all Customer Service and Accounts Receivable duties as needed.
- Works with accounting staff to develop, implement and continually update streamlined standard operating procedures and controls for all processes.
- Establishes and nurtures relationships with office and plant personnel.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related field and two or more years of manufacturing and inventory-based accounting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Experience in Cost Accounting, Inventory Management, Accounts Receivable/Billing, Accounts Payable, Sales Orders and Purchase Orders preferred. Dairy/Food industry experience preferred.
- Advanced computer and database management skills; proficient in MS Office Suite with advanced Excel skills is required. SQL experience, exposure to accounting software and ERP systems is preferred.
- Knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting, budgeting and financial reporting is required.
- Ability to demonstrate solid business judgment through advanced critical thinking, analytical, analysis and extensive problem-solving and decision-making skills to understand and interpret production costs, margins, process costs and variances is required.
- Self-motivated, ability to work independently, advanced organizational and time management skills, ability to multitask and set priorities, including ability and willingness to work with a sense of urgency and meet constant deadlines with attention to detail and quality control is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate (verbal and written) effectively is required.
- Exceptional leadership abilities with the ability to collaborate effectively and foster strong teamwork skills is required.
- Ability to research, recommend and implement process improvements is required.
