What are the responsibilities and job description for the Forensic Science Specialist position at Westchester County Government?
The Westchester County Department of Laboratories and Research has an immediate opening for a Forensic Science Specialist to perform complex chemical, microscopic and instrumental analyses of physical evidence submitted to the Forensic Science lab. This position functions in a lead capacity over professional, technical and clerical personnel.
The Forensic Science Specialist performs complex chemical, physical, microscopic and instrumental methods for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of biological fluids, DNA, and controlled and other drug related substances; Participates in the lab’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and assists with the administration and security of DNA records submitted to CODIS; Performs difficult chemical, physical, microscopic and instrumental methods for the analysis of physical evidence (i.e. hair, fibers, glass, paint, arson, gunshot residue, etc.); Performs methods development and/or verification by conducting various experiments on new equipment, instruments and/or software.; Monitors on-going QA standards to ensure consistency in the quality of lab results within the assigned unit; Does other related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry or Medical Technology, or closely related field, which must have included or been supplemented by 20 credit hours in chemistry and either (a) 4 years of progressively responsible experience in a Forensic Science Laboratory gained within the last 7 years; or (b) a Master's Degree in one of the above stated fields and 3 years experience as stated in (a).
SUBSTITUTION:
Possession of PhD in one of the fields stated above may be substituted for 2 years of the required experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess NY State Driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain same while in the title.
