Western Construction is looking for an experienced Paving Superintendent to join our team. The Superintendent will arrange the work of one or more paving crews and coordinate activities of workers engaged in spreading, rolling, tamping, and patching asphalt or similar material to form surfaces of highways, streets, parking lots, aircraft landing strips, and driveways. This position will provide overall on-site leadership and management on a construction project site
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Superintendent will report to the Paving Operations manager and is considered the Company’s representative and the main point of contact on the construction site. The Superintendent handles the flow of communication between the Client’s on-site representatives, on-site inspectors, subcontractors, and employees.
The Superintendent plans, coordinates, and supervises onsite functions including scheduling, material control, and day-to-day direction of field personnel. The Superintendent position exists between the Paving Operations Manager and the Crew Foreman. While the Paving Operations Manager’s role is primarily to manage the client, the Superintendent’s role is to manage the Foremen and Crew. Desired outcomes include:
To oversee and improve efficiency, performance, profitability, quality, morale, and image to the public among the crews and to improve communication between the crew and Project Management.
To assist the Paving Operations Manager and allow the company to serve more customers more efficiently.
Improve field staff training, recruiting, and retention.
Coordinates plans and supervises field staff, subcontractors, and craft activities for the assigned project.
- Liaison with other departments, plants, etc. to ensure all required materials, equipment, and inspections support the project schedule.
- Coordinates plans and specifications with the Project Manager, clarifying discrepancies.
- Optimizes operations procedures.
- Chooses techniques and defines asphalt means and methods.
- Supervises Forman.
- Work with Trucking Foreman and Mechanics to ensure trucks, tools, and equipment are working properly.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and physical.
- Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.
- Must have 5 years of experience with construction equipment.
- The ability to read and understand project plans is a requirement.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. A commercial driver's license is a plus.
- Positive, professional attitude and strong work ethic.
Physical Requirements
- Able to physically lift heavy materials (up to 50 pounds) frequently throughout the work shift with or without assistance.
- Frequent walking, sitting, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, climbing, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers.
- Standing/working on feet for extended periods and walking across uneven terrain, climbing up and down ladders and stairways.
- Able to work in extreme weather conditions and elements, including but not limited to heat, cold, rain, mud, dust, etc.
- Frequent exposure to noise, dust, fuel, oil, and other chemicals.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment and any other safety-related equipment.
- Able to work a minimum of 10 hours a day.
