Position is responsible for risk selection and pricing within assigned authority level. The Assistant Underwriter works with the Territorial Manager - Marketing and underwriting team to meet loss ratio, written premium, and service objectives. This position refers risks outside their authority levels to the Commercial Underwriter Position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Accepts or rejects and assigns proper classifications and pricing for new business based on underwriting criteria, investigative reports and loss history within assigned authority levels.
Reviews renewal policies for acceptability and gives renewal instructions to CSR within assigned authority levels.
Underwrites existing business within assigned authority levels.
Communicates with Territorial Managers – Marketing and other departmental and company personnel regarding underwriting issues.
Communicate via telephone, fax, electronic and written communication with agency personnel on underwriting issues.
Travels to agencies to strengthen company/agency relationships, to discuss underwriting issues, and for on and off site training.
Provides instructions for rating, classification, pricing and endorsements to CSR staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma
3 years in Commercial Lines department, equivalent business experience or 2 year college degree preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Basic knowledge of Commercial Lines rating, coverages, and risk selection
PC skills
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The individual must be able to effectively and clearly communicate with agency, team, departmental and company personnel via telephone, fax, e-mail, one-on-one dialogue and small group presentations in a highly professional manner.
REASONING ABILITY
The position requires the individual to apply common sense, understanding, reasoning and sound judgement to properly evaluate and analyze accounts within assigned authority levels.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
INS or CPCU courses are encouraged
Additional insurance course work and seminars are highly recommended.

Each Assistant Underwriter is responsible for servicing agents within assigned territories. The Assistant Underwriter will be assigned a specific work cubicle station. The workstation will be located adjacent to other similar workstations. The workstation has the necessary equipment to perform the position duties including personal computer, telephone, file space, and needed work table space.
The environment is reasonably quiet with needed interaction between other team members, immediate supervisor, and other company staff. Moderate noise level from telephone calls is expected.
