The Commercial Lines Underwriter Trainee reports directly to the assigned Commercial Lines Manager. The person in this position will be required to demonstrate progressive development in the training process through a formal training and developmental program. This program may include assigned courses of study, one-on-one training, on-the-job instruction, classroom training, and training of internal systems and procedures.
Salary Grade (8) 48,198 - 60,248 - 72,298
At the successful completion of the training program, the trainee will be ready to move to the Commercial Lines Underwriter position and assume a market/territory of agencies or a Floater Underwriter position. The completion of the training program and the ability to apply the knowledge learned are essential to becoming a Commercial Lines Underwriter.
The trainee is responsible for properly selecting and pricing risks within assigned authority levels. This position requires the ability to foster a good team relationship, both internally and externally, with the agents.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:
Examine documents such as applications, inspection reports, MVR reports, financial reports, ISO reports, cost estimators and other information to evaluate risk selections. Determine whether to accept, modify, or decline risks within assigned authority levels.
Review claim underwriting memos and loss reports to determine future action. Review and approve amendment requests, quotes, and new business within assigned authority.
Review renewal business for acceptability, and price the renewals based on risk characteristics and market conditions within assigned authority levels.
Have complete understanding and working knowledge of WRG’s Commercial Lines policy systems and accounting systems. Have understanding and working knowledge of WRG’s Commercial Lines underwriting philosophies and guidelines and have the ability to handle inquiries from our agents.
Communicate with Territorial Manager(s) and other departmental and company personnel regarding underwriting issues.
Communicate via telephone, fax, electronic, and written communication with agency personnel on underwriting issues.
Travel to agencies to strengthen company/agency relationships, to discuss underwriting issues, and for on and off site training.
Demonstrate positive leadership skills.
Special projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
College Degree or equivalent business experience preferred or minimum 5 years of Commercial Lines experience and completed insurance coursework.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employees are required to sit at a workstation to perform various PC functions. Additionally, the employee is required to devote substantial time to telephone communication.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
Employees will be required to travel from time to time. This may require extended periods of time sitting in a vehicle.

Each Underwriter Trainee is responsible for servicing all agents within assigned territories. The Underwriter Trainee will be assigned a specific work cubicle station. The work station will be located adjacent to other similar work stations. The work station has the necessary equipment to perform the position duties including personal computer, telephone, file space, and needed work table space.
The environment is reasonably quiet with needed interaction between other unit employees, immediate supervisor, and other company staff. Moderate noise level from telephone calls is expected.
