Job Duties

Western State Hospital (WSH) is recruiting for a Part Time Public Safety Officer who will maintain adequate coverage in order for the Public Safety Department to fulfill its mission statement at WSH. The part time Public Safety Officer will serve as bailiff for the judicial hearings at WSH and take patients transports; respond to assist unit staff with patients as request; conduct walkthroughs as designated by the Administration on the units and grounds of WSH and to help provide a safe and secure environment/milieu for patients and staff; check in and scan visitors in the front lobby as well as patients returning via the front lobby; assist visitors as needed; check the public safety of all buildings and units; transport combative, dangerous, public safety patients to/from other state facilities, court hearings, and appointments; locate and return UA patients; investigate and compile detailed information pertaining to writing a special report from start to finish; patrol hospital property, monitor parking, traffic, and conduct vehicle accident investigations as deemed necessary by management.

Minimum Qualifications

- high school graduate or equivalent
- valid Virginia Driver's License with excellent driving record
- experience in law enforcement, public safety, or related fields and positions meeting and dealing with the general public as a supplier of services
- good public relations skills, strong interpersonal skills, and oral and written communication skills
- ability to work with mentally ill patients to include adults and juveniles, as well as the ability to work cooperatively with other Public Safety staff, hospital officials, employees, and local law enforcement officers
- ability to pursue, apprehend, and return escaping patients to the supervision of their unit staff and physically interact with out-of-control patients and return them to control, and manual dexterity, standing, walking, and lifting as routine part of work

Eligible candidates shall be evaluated and approved by MMAC following established guidelines prior to acceptance in program and referral to PHS. The eligible candidates shall have last applied the majority of the hands-on patient care skills as indicated in the MMAC GSOP no later than 12-months prior to MMAC application date.
