Position Summary
The Dermatopathology Manager oversees all operations within the dermatopathology laboratory, ensuring the quality, efficiency, and compliance of laboratory processes. This role requires managing laboratory staff, optimizing workflows, and maintaining high standards in pathology specimen processing, diagnosis support, and lab management. The Dermatopathology Manager collaborates with dermatologists, pathologists, and administrative teams to deliver high-quality patient care and support laboratory excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Laboratory Operations Management
- Oversee daily operations of the dermatopathology lab, including specimen processing, staining, and slide preparation.
- Implement and monitor quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) protocols to ensure diagnostic accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Develop and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) to optimize lab performance and meet best practice standards.
- Team Leadership and Development
- Manage and support a team of lab technicians, histotechnologists, and other lab personnel.
- Conduct training and continuing education to ensure staff competency in dermpath processes and safety standards.
- Perform regular performance evaluations and foster a collaborative, efficient work environment.
- Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance
- Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and other relevant regulatory standards.
- Coordinate lab inspections, certifications, and accreditation processes.
- Maintain thorough records of QC activities, calibration, maintenance, and inspections for all lab equipment.
- Financial and Inventory Management
- Assist with budget planning, cost management, and financial oversight of the lab.
- Manage laboratory supplies, equipment, and inventory, working with vendors to optimize cost and quality.
- Prepare financial and operational reports as requested by the Laboratory Director or Practice Director.
- Patient Care and Client Support
- Work closely with dermatologists, pathologists, and other healthcare providers to ensure timely and accurate diagnosis support.
- Serve as a point of contact for questions and concerns from physicians and patients regarding lab results and procedures.
- Enhance the patient experience by prioritizing quality and efficiency in diagnostic services.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Biology, Medical Laboratory Science) required; Master’s degree preferred. Certification in Dermatopathology or Histotechnology (ASCP) highly desirable.
Experience: Experience in a dermatopathology or histology lab, with experience in a management or supervisory role.
Skills:
In-depth knowledge of dermatopathology lab processes, techniques, and equipment.
Familiarity with laboratory regulations and accreditation standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP).
Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
Proficiency with laboratory information systems (LIS) and other lab management software.
