Westwood Public Schools seeks candidates of diverse backgrounds and experiences for the position of High school Athletic Director. The AD works closely with the Principal, Athletic Trainer, District Administration, and support staff to oversee all aspects of the 6-12 athletic program. Our ideal candidate is passionate, approachable, and dedicated to supporting all students. You will be an integral part of our leadership team as we create and sustain a culture of excellence, sportsmanship, community, and learning.

 

The Athletic Director reports directly to the high school principal and collaborates with the middle school principal. This is a school-year position (224 days) that includes evenings, weekends, and summer work days.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field required, Master's degree preferred
  • Licensure as a Supervisor/Director by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (preferred or willing to become certified) 
  • CPR certification required

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Culture: develops a community-wide athletic culture in which students strive for excellence—not perfection, develop decision-making and problem-solving skills, and build confidence and character by sharing ownership of their team, engaging in leadership activities, and contributing to the community.  

 

  • Coaching Staff: recruits, hires, develops, and evaluates the coaching staff, and plans/ provides/recommends programs and resources for the professional growth and development of coaches.

 

  • Communication: communicates timelines and requirements for student registration, shares expectations and schedules with coaches and athletes, maintains a positive and visible social media presence to promote all athletics, and regularly updates the athletics website and athletic alumni records. 
  • Equipment and Facilities Management: equitably meets equipment and uniform needs for each team; collaborates with school and town maintenance staff to maintain grounds and equipment; collaborates with Athletic training staff for the prevention, care, rehabilitation, and safety of all student-athletes; schedules safety checks; oversees reservation and usage of athletic facilities by school teams and outside organizations.
  • Event Management: schedules contests, officials, buses, and game administrators; bids on contractual services (i.e., rink, pool, ski time, emergency personnel); ensures coaches, athletes, and spectators comply with policies and regulations; manages ticket sales and gate access; monitors and manages crowd behavior, and ensures a safe environment at all athletic events.
  • Budget Management: collaborates with the Principal and the Director of Finance to manage the Athletics budget and ensure funding plans for facilities and equipment maintenance and other programmatic needs.
  • Policy and Procedures: ensures compliance with all WPS policies, including the school and student-athlete handbook, MIAA rules and regulations, and Massachusetts General Laws; support coaches and athletes in upholding the values of the school and district.
  • Professional Organizations: participates in regular Tri-Valley League meetings, MIAA meetings and committees, and MSSADA meetings and conferences.
  • Partnerships:  establishes positive relationships with students, families, administration, and media; supports and attends events for all sports teams; interfaces with and provides general guidance to fundraising organizations.
  • Assumes other leadership responsibilities assigned by the building principal.

 

Job Environment

Work takes place in classrooms and other building rooms/areas, including offices, auditorium, gym, lunchroom and hallways, within a school building setting, primarily indoors. Job takes place in a high-performing school district with high expectations.



Physical Requirements

  • Requires sufficient vision to read printed documents and to view detail on a computer screen for extended periods.
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and reaching, as well as carrying and occasionally lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to speak in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation, on the telephone, and in the classroom.
  • Ability to hear sounds clearly up to twenty feet.
  • Travel among buildings may be required.
