The Westwood summer league coaching staff seeks to offer quality swimming instruction that challenges each swimmer for individual growth, while at the same time creating an inclusive and fun environment. Westwood swim coaches encourage every team member to give their best, develop friendships and support teammates. The overarching goal is to foster a lifelong love of the sport of swimming.

Position summary:

  • Work directly with swimmers to improve their technique, endurance and speed.
  • Supervise, guide and collaborate with additional coaching staff.
  • Develop practice plans and oversee the team’s daily workouts.
  • Create meet line-ups and enter into SwimTopia (by 11AM day of dual meets).
  • Communicate with the designated WW league representatives and all WW parents.
  • Attend all swim meets (Time Trials, GFSL dual meets, City Meet and Finals) as well as the end of season team banquet. See “Schedule Commitment” below.
  • Promote a positive, encouraging and challenging atmosphere in which all swimmers, regardless of their ability, may improve their skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • 19 years of age.
  • Prior swim coaching experience required.
  • Passion for swimming and extensive knowledge of the four competitive strokes.
  • Motivation to instruct and inspire others.
  • Understanding of .
  • Ability to use SwimTopia to create meet line-ups and communicate with the team.
  • High level professional interaction with WW parents, coaches and reps of other teams.

Schedule Commitment:(We’ll discuss any conflicts you may have in the interviewing process. Specific changes to scheduling conflicts will be noted in your offer letter.)

  • Coach Training (GSFL required): Date TBD
  • Pre-season afternoon practices (Monday, May 12 - Friday, May 23)
  • Regular season morning practices (Tuesday, May 27 - Friday, July 11) (minus Memorial Day, City Meet and July 4th)
  • Regular season afternoon practices (Monday & Thursday (beginning Thursday, May 29 and ending Thursday, July 10)
  • Time Trials: Tuesday, May 20
  • 6 GFSL Dual Meets (Tuesdays): May 27, June 3, 10,17, 24 and July 8
  • City Meet: Friday, June 20
  • GFSL Finals: Sunday, July 13
  • End of Season Party: Monday, July 14

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Safety is always the number one objective.
  • Refrain from using your cell phone while actively coaching.
  • Arrive at the pool 15 minutes ahead of the practice start time to ensure that you are set up and ready to coach when swimmers arrive. You are responsible, with the help of other coaches, to set up the lane ropes and backstroke flags each morning as well as pull out any necessary equipment like kickboards, clock, etc.
  • Come to practice ready to coach. Expect to be walking the deck or standing at the ends actively giving instruction and encouragement. As appropriate, you may need to physically enter the water to assist swimmers and/or provide instruction.
  • Ensure that swimmers always have supervision while in the pool. If you need to leave the pool deck you must ensure that another coach is supervising swimmers.
  • Conduct age appropriate and ability appropriate practices each session. Work with other coaches to divide the responsibility of instruction and supervision.
  • Communicate with swimmers regarding their needs and progress.
  • Be aware of any medical conditions or special needs of swimmers and be familiar with emergency procedures or special plans for swimmers.
  • Maintain discipline at the practice. The conduct of swimmers during all practices and meets is the responsibility of the coaches. Any swimmer misconduct should be addressed directly to the swimmer first (Instruct swimmer to get out of the pool and give correction privately - maintain the swimmer’s dignity). If needed, then involve the parent and child, and finally if necessary you may ask for the parent reps to get involved. Continued misconduct should be communicated to the parent reps.
  • Be accessible to address parents’ questions and concerns.

Swim Meet Responsibilities:

  • Create a meet lineup and enter into SwimTopia prior to each swim meet.
  • Assistant Coaches can provide feedback/suggestions on lineup, .
  • Be available to address questions and concerns of coaches of opposing team
  • Coordinate and communicate with other WW coaches regarding meet-day changes, warm-ups, and team cheer.
  • Be on deck watching the swimmer races, cheering and giving feedback to swimmers.
  • At the end of a meet, work with swimmers and parents to put the pool back in order.
  • Wait until the meet is scored to review results with parent reps.

End of Season Responsibilities:

  • Communicate with parent reps any needs or desires regarding the end of season party.
  • Lead and oversee the choosing of awards and be prepared to speak about the swimmers and the season at the team banquet.
  • Attend an end of season job review with hiring committee after the season is complete.

  • Weekends as needed
