Summary
Whatcom County Public Works is hiring a temporary extra help employee to help with Natural Resources Pollution Identification and Correction (PIC) Program outreach activities. This position will support PIC program outreach by connecting community members with information about pollution prevention behaviors related to dog waste. Length of Position:
- April-May and September-October: flexible schedule up to 69 hours/month.
- June – August: Thursday – Saturday, at least 80 hours per month. Evening and weekend hours are required and will be a regular part of this position’s schedule.
Key Duties Include:
- Assisting with the implementation of outreach programming and events.
- Maintaining communication with community partners and delivering outreach materials to partners.
- Executing outreach events with a focus on pet waste, including talking in-person with community members about pollution prevention behaviors.
- Collecting data and photographs and keeping accurate event summary records.
- Maintaining pledge records and outreach supplies.
- Occasionally doing field surveys to assess levels of pet waste at locations throughout the county.
Qualifications
- Experience and/or interest in preservation, restoration, protection and enhancement of natural resources.
- Education, outreach, or community engagement experience is highly preferred.
- Being familiar and comfortable interacting with the public in a professional capacity.
- Must be willing and able to work outdoors.
- Must be able to work independently with limited supervision.
- Excellent organization, time management, writing, and communication skills are required.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Must have a driving record that meets County standards and possess a driver's license at time of hire and throughout employment.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
