Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. A Age-group Coordinator at the Whatcom Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families while participating fully as member of a camp staff team to implement a successful day camp program.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • In conjunction with the Adventure Camp Coordinator supervise camp staff and volunteers.
    • Communicate YMCA policy and procedures to camp staff and volunteers.
    • Provide ongoing support to camp staff by role modeling effective group management, ensuring proper supplies are available, and identifying and providing needed breaks.
    • Help plan and lead all staff meetings and trainings.
    • Provide mid-summer evaluations.
    • Meet with Jr. Counselors twice weekly to review expectations and provide feedback on performance; and communicate with Camp Coordinator regarding the performance of Jr. Counselors.
  • Build positive relationships with campers and parents.
  • Model and teach the YMCA core values (honesty, respect, caring and responsibility) and philosophy of the YMCA with campers, parents, and other staff in a positive and professional manner consistent with the personnel policies and mission of Adventure Day Camp.
  • Demonstrate and enforce excellent safety and risk management.
  • Plan and implement camp activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with the YMCA values. Which include but not limited to All-Camp games and activities, skill clinics, rainy day activities, age-group games, and opening and closing ceremonies.
  • Be aware and communicate the daily and weekly schedule to counselors and campers.
  • Implement camp policies and procedures regarding attendance, medical, discipline, abuse prevention and emergency situations.
  • Recognize individual and group conflicts; effectively provide support to resolve conflicts based on camp values and procedures.
  • Follow YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Maintain positive relations with YMCA staff. Model relationship-building skills in all interactions.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Will have demonstrated experiences and background in:
    1. Child and youth development
    2. Behavior management, positive conflict resolution
    3. Specific outdoor or recreation skills experience and expertise to manage camp programs
    4. Affinity and skill in dealing with special needs
  2. Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
  3. Previous experience with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  4. Current CPR (Adult, Infant & Child) and First Aid, AED certifications.
  5. Complete Praesidium Child Abuse prevention training before working directly with children.
  6. Must have or be in the process of obtaining the following:

___ HIV/Bloodborne Pathogen training

___ MERIT ID account

___ DCYF Required Trainings

___ Food Handlers Card

___ Cleared Portable Background Check from MERIT

___ MMR Immunization Record
