POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor at Whatcom Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- To instruct participants of all ages how to swim in accordance with the swim program of the YMCA.
- To be on time and prepared for classes.
- To be responsible for setting up and putting away any equipment used to teach.
- To take attendance on appropriate rosters and turn in to supervisor at the conclusion of the lesson session.
- To fill out appropriate progress report for each student taught.
- To communicate with parents about the progress of their child.
- To provide positive customer service to all participants.
- To attend all staff meetings.
- To promote all programs of the YMCA, and model the core values of the YMCA.
- To be knowledgeable of emergency procedures.
- To keep current and obtain appropriate certifications.
- To follow procedures set forth by the Aquatic Director of the Whatcom Family YMCA.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- American Red Cross or YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent is preferred.
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- At least 16 years of age.
- Lifeguard certification is preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
- Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
Salary : $18 - $20
