Wheaton College has an opening to join a dynamic Residential Life program working directly with undergraduate students and student Resident Advisors. This is a great opportunity to be part of an enthusiastic and dedicated team in supporting the first-year and sophomore residential experience at Wheaton.

To support and enhance the mission of the Office of Residential Life, the Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) is a full-time, ten-month role responsible for contributing to the co-curricular education of students primarily through the development of a vibrant and engaged residential community. This includes the day-to-day management of a residential area with approximately 350 residents and the supervision of up to 15 Resident Advisors. This position is highly focused on supporting student transitions and providing an active, educational presence in the residence halls.

The Residential Life Coordinator position is a Live In position and is provided with a semi furnished apartment, a meal plan, and a designated parking spot. Wheaton is located in a picturesque New England town with easy access to the train providing a 30 min trip into Boston or Providence. The Cape Cod Beaches are also just a 30 min ride from campus. Professional Development funds are also available.

Job Responsibilities
Administration
  • Hold office hours that are posted and communicated with supervisor, Resident Advisors, and students.
  • Participate in hall opening, closing processes, inspections, and other operational processes.
  • Assist with logistics pertaining to room changes, keys, checkouts, etc.
  • Assist with coordination of monthly Resident Advisor all-staff meetings.
  • Carry out administrative duties such as filing, typing, printing, copying, scanning, etc.
  • Correspond with Resident Advisors, students, and families as necessary.
  • Assist with Residential Life assessment and evaluation efforts.
  • Communicate with physical plant regarding facilities needs in assigned buildings

Community Development
  • Maintain visibility in the office, by attending, and facilitating events and programs.
  • Develop regular programming series dedicated to student transitions and belonging.
  • Collaborate with the Orientation Planning Committee on the planning and execution of New Student Orientation sessions.
  • Respond to community issues and concerns such as roommate or community conflicts etc.
  • Collaborate with campus partners as well as the broader Wheaton community.
  • Role model a healthy and balanced lifestyle that demonstrates integrity, kindness, flexibility, respect and humor.
  • Create and support first-year programming that enhances the sense of community and supports the mission of the college.
  • Support the Living Learning Communities through active collaboration with faculty.
Student Support
  • Follow-up with residents who may be students of concern, in need of mediation of residential conflicts, and/or are in violation of college policies.
  • Generally counsel, advise, and refer students for personal, emotional, and academic needs.
  • Proactively create skill-building opportunities for students to enhance their coping skills, resiliency, and perspective.
  • Respond to conduct matters and violations of residence hall and college policies, including both violation adjudications and general follow-up.
  • Serve as a conduct officer for lower-level behavioral concerns within the community.
Crisis Management
  • Serve as primary college administrator on call as part of the “Tier 1” rotation.
  • Lead a coordinated response to campus incidents that involve Wheaton students.
  • Address emergent needs of students.
  • Support Campus Safety in their responsibilities with respect to addressing student concerns and advise them on proper protocol.
  • Respond to campus incidents when on call – which includes 24-hour availability approximately 13 calendar weeks per year.
  • Communicate as necessary with Student Affairs upper-administration staff, and other campus partners
Program Support
  • Participate in key campus programs, including, but not limited to – RA Training and In-Services, Theme House Training, RA Selection, Theme House Selection, Hall Opening/Closing, Non-Academic Year Housing, or Room Assignment/Selection.
  • Participate in all required professional staff, training and development.
  • Assist in recognition efforts of student leaders.
  • Support College programs and initiatives including New Student Orientation, Parent and Family Weekend, Senior Week, Commencement, and others.
  • Participate in department, division, and campus-wide committees as needed or desired.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact with a diverse population of students and colleagues.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and engaging in social justice based programming, practices, and education.
  • Mature communication skills and evidence of ability to work effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills related to program development, student development, and working with small or large groups.
  • Handle multiple projects and tasks at any given time as requested by the supervisor.
  • Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • Carry out the tasks as identified as a Title IX Reporter and a Clery Campus Security Authority, and respond and report accordingly.
  • Ability to manage a complex job involving ambiguous tasks, multiple responsibilities, and an irregular and unpredictable schedule.
  • Sense of humor and flexibility.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in college student personnel administration, higher education administration, or a related area OR 1-2 years professional or graduate level experience professionally within a higher education setting.
  • Experience in programming, assessment, and counseling in the context of a small residential college.
  • Experience advising student organizations and working with a student activities program.
  • Experience with conflict resolution and facilitating dialogue

When determining and establishing hiring rates or recruitment ranges for a position, the College considers a number of factors including the budget for the position, the range of the grade, the external market for the position or similar positions, level and scope of responsibilities, required education, skills and relevant experience as well as internal equity. All salary offers must have the prior approval of the Office of Human Resources.

The anticipated hiring or recruitment rate for this position is $45,000.
