Business Title:
Director of Residence Life – Wheeling University, Wheeling WV
Job Purpose:
The Director of Residence Life provides leadership and vision for a comprehensive residence life program that supports the academic mission of the University and fosters the development of students. This position creates a residential environment that promotes student learning and personal growth through the implementation of educational initiatives, student leadership opportunities, and community development. The Director of Residence Life is a “Live on Campus” position with housing provided and will report to the Dean of Students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the daily operations of all residence halls, including supervision of professional and student staff, budget management, facilities management, and occupancy management.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive residence life program that promotes student success, personal development, and community engagement.
- Provide leadership and direction to the Residence Life staff, including hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation.
- Create and maintain a positive and inclusive living environment that supports the diverse needs of the student population.
- Develop and enforce residence hall policies and procedures that ensure the safety and security of residents.
- Manage the residence hall budget and ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Collaborate with other university departments, including Student Activities, Counseling Services, Business Department, and Academic Affairs, to provide a holistic student experience.
- Respond to student concerns and emergencies in a timely and effective manner.
- Assess the effectiveness of residence life programs and make recommendations for improvement.
- Stay current on best practices in residence life and higher education.
- Serve as a member of the Student Affairs team and contribute to the division's overall mission.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
Required Experience: - Minimum of five years of progressive experience in Residence Life, including supervisory experience.
- Experience in budget management, staff training and development, and crisis response.
- Experience developing and implementing residential curriculum and programming.
- Experience working with diverse student populations.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Knowledge of student development theory and best practices in Residence Life.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
