The Graduate Assistant (GA) for the Student Success Center at Wheeling University plays a crucial role in supporting student academic success by providing direct assistance, resources, and guidance to undergraduate students. This position is designed to facilitate student learning, retention, and achievement through various academic support services.
Responsibilities:
Tutoring and Academic Support: Provide individual and small-group tutoring sessions to students seeking assistance in various subjects, including but not limited to mathematics, sciences, humanities, and writing.
Study Skills Development: Assist students in developing effective study habits, time management skills, and academic strategies tailored to their needs.
Workshop Facilitation: Plan, organize, and conduct workshops and seminars on topics related to study skills, academic success strategies, and exam preparation.
Resource Acquisition: Research and acquire educational materials, textbooks, and other resources beneficial to student learning and success.
Peer Mentoring: Serve as a mentor and role model to students, offering guidance and support in navigating academic challenges and university resources.
Data Entry and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of student interactions, sessions conducted, and academic progress reports as required by the Student Success Center.
Schedule and Work Hours:
The GA position is part-time, with a maximum of 20 hours per week.
Preferred available work hours are Monday – Thursday evenings, with flexibility for shorter hours on Fridays and occasional weekends based on student needs and center operations.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Enrollment in a graduate program at Wheeling University, preferably in a field related to education, counseling, or a relevant discipline.
Strong academic record with proficiency in the subject areas commonly required for undergraduate tutoring.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain complex concepts effectively.
