Description

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to perform general janitorial and light maintenance work in the care of County buildings, grounds, and surrounding areas. Employees in this classification perform recurring tasks in accordance with established practices and cleaning schedules.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Sweeps, mops, strips, scrubs, buffs, waxes, and vacuums floor surfaces; spot cleans carpeted areas; schedules floor work to ensure least possible disruption of work routines in buildings and offices.

Cleans and sanitizes restroom areas, fixtures, and water fountains; replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary.

Cleans windows, walls, air ducts, woodwork, blinds and light fixtures; dusts desks, ledges, and window sills.

Opens assigned building in the morning and turns on lights; opens locked areas of buildings with master keys as needed by office staff.

Empties trash receptacles and deposits collected refuse in proper receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.

Maintains, inventories, and orders cleaning and postage supplies.

Cleans kitchen facilities, including stove, refrigerator, microwave, counters, ice machine, and cupboards.

May function as mail clerk: picks up, sorts, and distributes incoming mail; weighs and meters outgoing mail; takes mail to post office; monitors postage machine; processes certified mail.

May serve as receptionist to cover lunch hour or other times when receptionist is unavailable: answers phone and directs calls to appropriate person; greets and directs visitors; copies documents; signs for and accepts materials and supplies delivered to building.

Maintains common areas and bulletin boards; sweeps exterior walk ways

Performs grounds maintenance work and basic landscaping; picks up trash and debris; empties trash receptacles; waters landscaping.

Operates a telephone, copier, vacuum cleaner, buffer, postage machine, computer, printer, scales, vehicle, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; six months experience in custodial work or mail room operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license if required to transport mail to post office.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to start, stop, operate and monitor the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Involves routine work according to clearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by well established procedures or sequences.
