Position Overview:

The Characterization laboratory is a fee-for service lab that provides cytogenetic and cell line characterization services to both academic institutions and commercial companies. The Senior Research Specialist will play a key role in providing technical services and other related responsibilities within the WiCell Characterization Lab. This will include performing laboratory techniques, and Cytogenetic based assays including but not limited to:

  • Metaphase chromosome preparations for G-Banded Karyotype
  • Fluorescence In Situ hybridization (FISH)
  • PCR-based assays
  • Short Tandem Repeat (STR) Analysis
  • Thaw and culture of human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) lines and related cell lines
  • Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) Microarray Analysis


Work is normally performed in a typical laboratory/office environment with workplace flexibility of up to two remote working days per month. Weekend work every 6-8 weeks on a rotational basis is required.


This is a full-time, onsite position located at 504 S. Rosa Road in Research Park, on the west side of Madison.


Candidate Requirements:

The Ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in a laboratory setting
  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, in biology or a related scientific program
  • Experience working in a GMP/GLP laboratory facility
  • Experience working and performing assays in a Cytogenetic laboratory including a minimum of 1 year experience with metaphase chromosome preparations
  • At least 1 year of experience performing PCR-based assays
  • Sterile culture techniques, culturing human pluripotent stem cells, or related cell lines
  • Experience working within a Quality Management system, creating and following Standard Operating Procedures and working on process improvement
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with others in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality, accuracy, reliability, and responsibility

  • Competitive pay based on experience, including minimum pay starting at $33 per hour
