Position Overview

The Seasonal Educator directly assists the Education Department in running daily programming operations. The Educator is expected to have great people skills, a passion for animals and education, and an energetic, positive personality. This position has opportunity to engage in outreach programs, overnight and day camps, public engagement, and animal handling/husbandry. The Educator will work with the Education team to market and enhance the Education Department’s unique programs as well as help with their evaluation.

Responsibilities

Understands and supports the department animal collection and facility mission. Knowledgeable of the behavior and ecology of animals in the department's collection, in captivity and in the wild, in order to improve captive care. Provides quality customer service through proper interpretation of animal collection via on and off site keeper talks.

Implements operations of the department's animal collection, including but not limited to:

  • Handles education animal collection as trained.
  • Observes and communicates health, diet, animal behavior, and other husbandry needs of the department's collection to the Education Supervisor.
  • Assists in capture, restraint, and transport of animals in the department.
  • In the absence of the Lead Educator and Education Supervisor, performs the duties of the supervisor in charge during emergency procedures in a Code as needed.
  • Monitors the public ensuring the safety of visitors and animals.
  • Assists the supervisor in updating and writing of new protocols, safety procedures, programs, and curriculum.
  • Participates in and leads public outreach programs and scout overnights.
  • Conducts guided tours.
  • Works with the Education team to market and enhance the Education Department's unique programs as well as help with their evaluation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


  • Preferred Bachelor's degree in a field complementary to Wildlife Safari's mission; Zoology, Wildlife Biology, Conservation Education, Environmental Education, or related field.
  • Preferred one-year experience in work relevant to animal handling with small mammals, birds, reptiles, or invertebrates.
  • Preferred one-year experience as a formal or an informal educator or interpreter.
  • Must be able to perform department duties to the highest standard of quality and efficiency, with strong teamwork and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership, good communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to receive and implement feedback.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Publisher, and Power Point.
  • Valid driver license for a minimum of three-years with a clean driving record.
  • Able to endure extreme weather conditions.
  • Able to bend, stoop, and walk on uneven surfaces, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Able to pass pre-employment substance, and annual TB tests.
  • Able to work in a team and independently as needed.
