Wildwood Biological Consulting, a California-based environmental consulting firm, is seeking a motivated Biologist / Resource Monitor to work on a road construction project in Sequoia National Park, CA. The project started in March 2025 and is scheduled to run until late 2027. The successful applicant may be kept on to work additional projects, as available, upon completion of this project.
Position Type
This position is intended to share the workload on an active project. It is project-based and will fluctuate between part-time and on-call status depending on project needs, with potential for occasional full-time coverage. This role will complement the work of an existing biologist and may include alternating field shifts, joint monitoring days, or coverage during time off. This opportunity is ideal for candidates with flexible availability who are interested in gaining field experience in environmental consulting and biological monitoring. While a hire that is interested in working for the duration of the project is ideal, consideration will be given to those seeking seasonal employment or a qualified college student seeking a summer internship.
Responsibilities
The Biologist / Resource Monitor responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- monitoring construction activities to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and project-specific mitigation measures;
- conducting pre-construction surveys for nesting migratory birds;
- identifying active nests and implementing species protection measures;
- completing and submitting daily monitoring logs;
- documenting and reporting observations of sensitive wildlife or plant species and taking appropriate action to protect resources; and
- communicating effectively with project stakeholders, including construction crews and agency representatives.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college program in biology, environmental science, ecology, or a related field;
- completion of at least 2 years of relevant undergraduate coursework.
Additional Requirements:
- familiar with Sierra Nevada flora and fauna;
- basic understanding of ecological principles and wildlife identification;
- experience with field data collection and management;
- able to hike long distances over varying terrain under varying weather conditions;
- able to work full days in the field;
- possession of a valid CA driver's license with clean driving record for past 3 years and possession of a reliable 4x4 vehicle or capable AWD vehicle;
- comfortability driving on uneven surfaces in mountainous terrain;
- ability to follow protocols, take direction, and communicate clearly; and
- must be punctual, reliable, and professional in all work settings.
Preferred Experience:
Early-mid career biologists are also encouraged to apply and, in addition to the above requirements, should possess the following:
- 2 years of experience performing environmental compliance monitoring and nesting bird surveying;
- ability to identify bird species of the Sierra Nevada by sight and sound;
- ability to perform field work independently;
- familiarity with field data collection apps; and
- Local Hire Preference: Preference will be given to applicants local to Three Rivers, CA, Visalia, CA, or the surrounding area. A local applicant that meets all job requirements may receive a higher rate.

Hourly wage will be based on qualifications and/or experience. The hourly rate for an applicant that is still in college is $25/hr. The hourly rate for an early-mid career biologist is $30-45/hr, DOE.
