JOB DESCRIPTION:
General Statement Of Duties: This internship will provide the successful candidate with experience working in parks and recreation. Willamalane Park and Recreation District has more than 1,500 acres of natural areas, 45 parks, and five recreational facilities. The GIS Intern will assist the Planning, Parks & Facilities Division with specific Geographic Information System (GIS) projects and tasks.

An employee in this classification is responsible for providing advanced support toward data collection and database management for projects related to inventory of various physical assets and natural resources. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Planning, Parks & Facilities Director, as well as projects assigned by other Park Services Administration team members, with work being reviewed primarily based on quality of work and results attained.
Examples Of Essential Duties Performed: (Illustrative only. Any single position of a class will not necessarily involve all of the duties listed, and many positions will involve duties that are not listed.)
- Support the Planning, Parks & Facilities Division with the following tasks and projects:
- Assist with collection and analysis of district-wide tree inventory survey field data, using a combination of software platforms such as ArcGIS, iTree, and Cartegraph
- Assist with training and orientation of youth crews for field collection of tree inventory data using mobile devices and ArcGIS software, and assist with field supervision;
- Assist with data processing, analysis, and report writing to enable use of collected data for park and facility maintenance and management; and
- Assist with collection and entry of asset data for park amenities and other infrastructure, as well as facility assets for use in the district’s asset maintenance management system (Cartegraph);
- Assist with written and verbal presentation of project accomplishments to internal and external stakeholders, including park and facility maintenance teams, executive leadership, and the district’s Board of Directors
- Provides data and mapping support to a variety of GIS projects as required.
- Checks and evaluates assignments for accuracy in terms of data completeness, consistency, currency, and conformance with design criteria.
- Provide excellent internal and external customer service. Create a positive experience for employees through professional and courteous behavior and effective problem-solving resolution.
- Ability to conduct field work independently; exercise prudent professional judgement; and positively represent the district at all times.
- Perform other job-related duties or tasks as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge: Pursuing a degree in geography, geographic information systems (GIS), or related field. Knowledge and skills in the use of ArcGIS software; personal computer and web applications; basic principles and practices related to map and aerial imagery interpretation, digital cartography, automated geoprocessing analysis, source data evaluation, and accuracy verification procedures; quality assurance principles, practices and procedures related to overall spatial data.
Skills: Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills; effective and positive interpersonal communication skills; strong computer sills, and knowledge of computer applications such as Google Docs and Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Accurate and efficient data entry and keyboarding
Abilities: Ability to evaluate the reliability of input data; read and interpret maps, aerial imagery, and other GIS source materials; communicate and work effectively with other employees and representatives of other agencies and governments using tact, courtesy and good judgment; work with accuracy and attention to detail to meet deadlines; understand and execute verbal and written instructions, policies and procedures.
Physical Demands Of The Position: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, manipulate objects, or conduct work tasks outdoors. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to 15 pounds on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc., and may infrequently require moving materials weighing up to 50 pounds with proper safety tools. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computers, keyboards, laptops, telephones, mobile devices, calculators, and standard office equipment. Required Experience And Training: High school diploma or equivalent and two years’ related experience; substantial completion of required coursework for a Minor or Major in geography, GIS, information systems, or related field; or possession of an Associate's degree one or more of such disciplines. Two years’ related experience includes working with databases or geographic information systems, or any combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job. Possession of a Certificate in GIS from an accredited program or academic institution is required if GIS was not a focus of coursework completed for the Associate’s degree.
Preferred Experience And Training: Bachelor’s degree in geography, GIS, information systems, or related field, and two years’ experience working with databases or geographic information systems, or any combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job. Possession of a Certificate in GIS from an accredited program or academic institution is preferred if GIS was not a focus of coursework completed for the Bachelor’s degree.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Must be a current freshman through junior college/university-level student.
- Will be required to pass a criminal record background check.
- Work is primarily performed onsite; some remote work may be possible within parameters of the project.
- Must possess, or have the ability to possess a valid Oregon driver’s license; safe driving record.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Hours/Shifts
Flexible, M-F, up to 10 hours per week, between the hours of 8am to 5pm. Willing to accommodate school schedule.
