Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Development for Campus Initiatives in the Office of University Advancement, the Director of Development for Campus Initiatives leads philanthropic capacity building and major gift fundraising for several university units, including but not limited to Strategic Cultural Partnerships and Military & Veteran Affairs. In supporting the assigned units, the Director provides Advancement counsel to relevant university administrators, develops and executes major gift fundraising strategy, and assists in coordinating fundraising efforts with Advancement partners including Corporate & Foundation Relations, Annual Giving & Philanthropic Engagement, Donor Relations, and Alumni Engagement.
The Director identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards a portfolio of 75-100 major gift prospects with the capacity to make gifts/pledges more than $50,000 within 3-5 years of identification, meeting increasingly aggressive annual fundraising goals and securing principal, major, and annual gifts to the university for endowment, capital, and annual support. In addition, the Director assists in the development of annual and campaign fundraising goals for assigned units and facilitates effective collaboration with University Advancement to meet them.
The Director will help foster a culture of belonging and trust that embraces all people and perspectives. This position is based in Williamsburg, Virginia, and is expected to work on site when not meeting with donors. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

- Progressively responsible experience in academic or non-profit fundraising (typically 5 years).
- Demonstrated success identifying, qualifying, soliciting, cultivating, and stewarding donors at the lead annual and major ($50,000 ) level.
- Successful track record of exceeding goals in a metrics-driven environment.
- Experience in enlisting and interacting with senior level leadership volunteers and committees.
- Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
- Superb judgment and the sensibility to adjudicate wisely among competing priorities.
- Exceptional reasoning, problem-solving and analytical skills, including an ability to translate ideas and concepts into clear, actionable steps.
- Superb organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
- Ability to work independently as well collaboratively with team members.
- Commitment to the core values of assigned units, including Strategic Cultural Partnerships and Military & Veteran affairs, to telling more inclusive histories and supporting the Common Ground framework towards more productive external partnerships.
