Unit Mission Statement
The mission of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and William & Mary’s Batten School of Coastal and Marine Sciences (Batten School) is to seek and broadly communicate knowledge in marine and coastal science to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world through research, education, and advisory service.
VIMS’ strategic sections are committed to the development of resilient systems through a focus on three grand challenges, ensuring science for stewardship of:
1.Ecosystem Health: connecting physical, chemical, biological, and socioeconomic systems to address environmental and community vulnerabilities
2.Natural Resources: providing translational science for sustainable management of coastal socio-ecological systems, especially fisheries and aquaculture
3.Coastal and Ocean Processes: connecting global trends and local drivers to understand and address environmental change.
VIMS ESL supports this mission by serving as a field station and seaside coastal seawater laboratory for basic marine science and aquaculture research, marine science education and service to the Commonwealth, particularly with regard to marine resources on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Position Summary
This position supports all research and education functions requiring vessel use, and marine operations equipment. The position will also support the collection, analysis, and management of data from field and lab research.
Conditions of Employment
This is a full-time, non-exempt position eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act, and University policy.

Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma
- Vessel operation experience with NASBL/Boating Safety Certificate or better certification.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Physical ability to repeatedly lift/carry 50 lbs.
- Willingness to work outdoors in all weather, mornings, evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors or higher degree
- Research experience including data collection and management
- CPR/First Aid certification
- Knowledge of Eastern Shore of Virginia Coastal Environment, local flora and fauna
- Boat trailering, launch and recover experience
- Willingness to travel regionally
