The Environment & Sustainability program promotes multidisciplinary education and research to produce active and literate environmental citizens, leaders, and problem solvers. We emphasize the value of integrating knowledge and approachs from the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and professional schools to generate a holistic understanding of environmental issues and policy making, while simultaneously stressing the need for in-depth training in at least one environmental discipline.
Position Summary
The Environment & Sustainability Program at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Research Associate position that will begin August 10, 2025.
We seek an individual with expertise in Multispecies Politics or Animate Ecologies. In this appointment, the postdoc will have substantial amounts of time to focus on their own research agenda. In addition, the postdoc will work with faculty mentors on a project on Multispecies Politics. The successful applicant will also be required to organize ENSP 250, a 1-credit lecture series, in the Spring semester of their first year and design and teach a new 3 or 4 credit course of their choosing in both the Fall and Spring semesters of their second year.
Required Qualifications
A Ph.D. is required at the time the appointment begins. Applicants from any humanistic discipline or the interpretative social sciences are eligible to apply.
Preferred Qualifications
Teaching experience and demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching at the undergraduate level relevant to environment and sustainability. Broad knowledge of Environmental Humanities, STS, or Ethnographic practice as a way to analyze and understand the relationship between the social and natural world.
Conditions of Employment
This is a restricted position, subject to the continued availability of funding.
This position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional overnight and weekend work as needed to meet the business needs of the operation.
