School Counselor (Grades 6-8)

POSITION TITLE:  Elementary School Counselor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED:

A valid certificate as a school counselor, and a Master’s Degree or its equivalent. 

REPORTS TO: Building Administrator

CONTRACT DAYS WORKED:  9 ½ months

JOB GOAL: 

The Elementary School Counselor will work with students, parents, and staff to assist all students in developing academic, social, and emotional success. The Counselor will identify and support the social emotional needs of all elementary students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Counsels individual students to facilitate transition from home to school, to build positive attitudes, self-understanding, and self-reliance.
• Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively with personal, social, academic, and family concerns.
• Coordinate, write, and distribute all student 504 plans.
• Maintain ongoing, confidential counseling notes. 
• Assist with student homeroom placements.
• Assist with the students’ transition between school buildings upon promotion.. 
• Administer assessments and analyze data to help meet student needs such as GATE (gifted) identification.
• Support the implementation of MTSS behavior and social emotional Tier 1, 2, and 3 through curriculum and support; will also lead and facilitate Tier 2 meetings.
• Will implement the Missouri School Counseling Program through curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services and system supports.
• Act as a co-facilitator with teachers for social emotional skills lessons presented in the classroom.
• Confers with parents whenever necessary.  
• Interprets the guidance program to the community.   
• Helps facilitate and administer required academic testing of students including any Board of Education required and/or State department of education required test.  
• Serves as liaison between the school and outside services and makes referrals to agencies outside the school such as Children’s Division, the courts, family services, psychiatrists, and counselors and maintains these records and protects their confidentiality.
• Assist in directing parents to competent resource personnel or community agencies when resources outside the school and home are needed.
• Assist school administration with the needs of all students, student conduct, and other duties as assigned.

Evaluation:  Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the

   provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.

OTHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Operate a computer and other instructional/office equipment

* Other duties as assigned.  This does not preclude the assignment of additional or supplemental duties. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment as needed to reflect such duties.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

* Duties performed typically in district settings to include the cafeteria, gym, recreational areas and other assigned areas.

* Physical demands can include but are not limited to:  Exerts up to 40 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects including equipment such as audio-visual.

* Frequent walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and other limited physical activities are required.

* Mental demands can include but are not limited to:  Comparing, copying, computing,

   compiling, analyzing, coordinating, and synthesizing.
