Director of Youth Development - Avery Branch
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. In conjunction with the Association Director of Youth Development, the Branch Director of Youth Development will provide hands-on leadership in the planning, coordinating, and implementation of all Out of School programs as well as overseeing the YMCA’s Child Development Center.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Directly supervises all aspects of the child care centers, camp, afterschool and other assigned program staff. Recruits and hires diverse staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity. On-boards and develops them for success. Organizes people and activities for efficiency and effectiveness
- Train, develop, schedule and supervise Youth Development Staff in 21st Century Learning Center program and YMCA Child Development Center.
- Within the 21st Century Learning Center programs:
- Maintain ongoing communication and collaboration with Association Director, Site Coordinators, After School Counselors, school administration, and community partners to successfully operate the program.
- Visits all after school sites weekly to ensure the program is meeting compliance.
- Provides Association Director of Youth Development with information on sites after visits and assists Director in implementing steps necessary to remedy weaknesses.
- Evaluates program quality and fidelity, and works with Site Coordinators to ensure compliance.
- Assists Site Coordinators and After School Counselors in developing curriculum, planning schedules, and engaging students.
- Manages registrations, rosters, record keeping, etc.
- Assist in planning and implementation of Summer Camp, ensures daily Camp operations run smoothly and in line with grant requirements.
- Ensures timely reporting of evaluation requirements.
- Assists in developing and monitoring the program’s budget and ordering supplies.
- Assists in the planning and facilitating of orientations and workshops to engage parents/caregivers.
- Provides ongoing communication with the parents/caregivers. Responds to parent/caregiver inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
- Attends required training and participates in support calls as needed.
- Collects and shares “Bright Spots” – stories of impact from the program.
- Develops relationships with school and community stakeholders to communicate the goals of the after school and summer programs and ongoing concerns about student needs.
- Manages food service in out of school programs and receives/maintains SafeServ certification.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree related to child/youth development or education preferred.
- Must have experience in youth development work, program development and staff supervision.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, plus ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of kids and adults from all socio- and economic segments of the community.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, problem solve and possess effective time management skills.
- Must be capable of directing the daily administrative, program related, and supervisory responsibilities in YMCA Youth programs.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of YMCA mission, purpose and goals, childcare policies and YMCA standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence.
- Ability to establish, collaborate and maintain relationships with staff, YMCA members, volunteers and community stakeholders
- Exemplify YMCA values (caring, honest, respect & responsibility), leadership qualities and a professional image.
- YMCA Team Leader certification required within 1 year.
- Must pass a criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen and MVR
- Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include: completion of Child Abuse Prevention, Risk Management, CPR, First Aid and AED.
- Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications.
