Wilson & Company, Inc., Engineers & Architects, a national consulting firm, is currently seeking a full-time Project Archaeologist-Field Director with a Master’s degree in Archaeology or Anthropology and field experience in the Midwest. We’re looking for someone with a good work ethic, enthusiasm for learning new things, and excellent writing skills. You’ll join our growing team of archaeologists and environmental professionals to help our customers comply with federal and state cultural resources and environmental laws. This individual will work with a team of environmental professionals from across the company to conduct environmental analyses and deliver quality documents supporting our federal, state, local, and tribal clients under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and other applicable federal and state regulations for environmental resource management.
In this position, you will lead archaeological fieldwork throughout Midwest, including Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, and Illinois and will supervise small teams of field technicians to conduct cultural resource inventories for a variety of our federal, state, local, and tribal clients. You will manage field generated data including site forms, GIS files, photos, and artifact analysis forms. You will participate as a primary or secondary author of inventory reports and will assist with the development of resource management recommendations. We intend to provide you with experience and training that will allow you to achieve Principal Investigator status in multiple states. Specific tasks will include completing field surveys, documenting archaeological and historic built environment resources, preparing technical reports, and writing resource sections of larger NEPA documents. Aside from the archaeology, we will also train you on compliance with NEPA and other environmental laws. Strong writing skills are required and experience with GIS is preferred. You will also serve as task manager supporting NEPA Project Managers in successful execution of deliverables, which includes marketing, scope and fee developments, and management of task schedules and budgets. Coordination with clients and/or resource agencies is key to success and, therefore, strong communication skills are required. All Wilson & Company environmental staff work collaboratively with engineering professionals in a variety of disciplines across the firm to meet project goals, and with other key staff to build relationships both locally and in all states where Wilson & Company is conducting environmental project work.
Essential Job Functions
- Provide technical archaeological and cultural resources expertise detailed in Job Description above.
- Serve as task manager on environmental projects firmwide; coordinate with and support project managers for overall project performance and deliver projects to clients on schedule and on budget.
- Conduct archaeological and cultural resources field surveys, includes travel throughout the Midwest and potential out-of-region travel to support a national environmental program.
- Lead crew of 1-3 field technicians in completing assigned survey areas within designated schedule.
- Prepare/author technical reports.
- Collaborate on the preparation of environmental and NEPA documentation.
- Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with engineering professionals in a variety of disciplines across Wilson & Company to meet project goals, and with other key staff to build client relationships in states where Wilson & Company is conducting environmental project work.
Required Skills and Experience
- Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Science (MS) degree in archaeology or anthropology or related discipline.
- 1 years of directly relevant field experience, survey and/or excavation in the, Midwest, or adjacent areas.
- 3 years of progressively responsible task management and report writing experience.
- Participation in an archaeological field school or 1.5 months of full-time archaeological excavation.
- Permitted or permittable to conduct survey as crew chief or Principal Investigator under state and federal permits in MO (6 months of experience in relevant culture areas).
- Working knowledge of National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 106 regulations, and state cultural resource statutes.
- Experience with GPS data collection technologies (Trimble or Juniper GNSS Receivers, ESRI Field Maps).
- Ability to work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, environmental, and cultural resources professionals.
- Task management skills with ability to complete work on schedule and within budget.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent technical writing skills.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills with attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe applications.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- 3 years of field experience as crew chief or project director.
- Experience working on various jurisdictions to meet the requirements of various agencies, including Various Midwest State Historic Preservation Offices, MoDOT, Nebraska DOT, , Tribal Historic Preservation Offices BLM, USFS and State Land.
- Experience documenting the historic built environment and/or historic architecture experience.
- Cultural resources experience in other states.
- Preparation of NEPA documents at the national, state, local and tribal level, including desktop data collection, analysis, and technical writing.
- Experience coordinating and consulting with regulatory agencies.
- Experience with ESRI software in collecting data and creating maps.
