Role Summary
The Controller is responsible for managing the accounting operations of Wilson Lumber Company, Kudzu Millwork, and other related entities. This role oversees financial reporting, internal controls, budgeting, and compliance to ensure the company’s financial integrity. The Controller plays a strategic role in mitigating risk, optimizing financial processes, and ensuring adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will work closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams to drive financial efficiency and support business growth while upholding the company’s core values of integrity, accuracy, and collaboration.
Scope of the Position
- The Controller will lead the accounting operations for Wilson Lumber Company and its affiliated companies, ensuring financial accuracy and compliance.
- This role oversees internal financial controls, financial reporting, and accounting systems to support strategic decision-making.
- The position requires collaboration with external auditors, banks, and tax authorities to ensure smooth financial operations.
- Up to 20% travel may be required.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Compliance
- Maintain and enforce a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations and reporting requirements.
- Monitor and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial accuracy.
- Manage outsourced financial functions as needed.
- Ensure timely processing of payroll, accounts payable, and debt payments.
- Oversee financial reconciliations, including daily bank reconciliations and fixed asset depreciation schedules.
- Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure an orderly accounting filing system.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Oversee the preparation and accuracy of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Provide timely financial reports to leadership, including variance analysis and operational metrics.
- Lead the budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with department heads.
- Develop financial models and benchmarks to measure company performance.
- Provide financial analysis for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
Audit & Risk Management
- Coordinate the provision of information for external audits, annual financial reviews, and tax filings.
- Ensure compliance with debt covenants and monitor debt levels.
- Collaborate with external auditors to facilitate annual financial reviews.
- Identify and mitigate financial risks through strong internal control measures.
Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Oversee and manage the accounting team, ensuring high performance and professional development.
- Collaborate with the CFO to support long-term financial planning and business strategy.
- Work closely with Sales, Operations, and HR to align financial goals with company objectives.
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the finance team.
Position Qualifications
Required Expertise
- Extensive experience in financial leadership, accounting operations, and compliance.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial regulations.
- Proven ability to develop financial policies and procedures to optimize efficiency and mitigate risks.
Technical Proficiency
- Proficiency in financial management systems (experience with Microsoft Dynamics, BisTrack, or Epicor ERP preferred).
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial modeling and data analysis.
Communication & Leadership Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for financial reporting and presentations.
- Ability to lead and mentor an accounting team while fostering a collaborative work environment.
- High level of integrity and ability to handle sensitive financial information.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (CPA or CMA preferred).
- 10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.
- Experience in manufacturing, construction materials, or the lumber industry is a plus.
Salary : $127,500 - $139,500
