Summary:
The Accounting Manager is responsible for managing the daily operations of the financial reporting accounting team under the direction of the Sr. Controller. Key responsibilities include general ledger controls and management, financial and investor reporting, external audit management, regulatory reporting, tax payments and reporting coordination, budget and forecast assistance, and accounting team coaching and management. The Accounting Manager will work closely with the Sr. Controller to develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures to ensure GAAP and regulatory accounting compliance, while also ensuring ongoing process improvements that benefit the accounting team and the company. The Accounting Manager reports to the Sr. Controller, who reports to the CFO. This role involves leading a team of accounting professionals and so previous management experience is paramount.
Responsibilities:
- Operates and maintains the general ledger to maximize financial controls, ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, and enhance team and company productivity
- Manages the general ledger closing process, including managing the preparation and posting of journal entries, account reconciliations, cash management, accounts receivable, capital projects, fixed assets, and leases
- Manages the monthly, quarterly, and annual company financial reporting process with internal and external stakeholders
- Manages monthly budget to actual variance reporting and analysis
- Leads, develops, and mentors a team of accounting professionals, ensuring their professional growth relative to company goals
- Manage and maintain accounting policies and practices that strictly adhere to GAAP and regulatory accounting principles, staying abreast of current guidance and recommending required changes to management
- Works closely with the Sr. Controller to effectively manage the annual external audit
- Manages and oversees regulatory reporting requirements and the company’s general ledger and FERC accounting ledger
- Maintains and oversees banking controls and cash management
- Manages tax payments, reporting, and filings with the assistance of the Sr. Controller
- Manages the company capital project and fixed asset reporting process
- Manages company lease accounting and associated polices and process
- Collaborates with cross-functional teams across the organization to support overall company goals and objectives with a strong customer service mindset, providing support and appropriate accounting data and reports as needed
- Supports, maintains, and recommends improvements to internal controls to the Sr. Controller and CFO
- Works closely with the Sr. Controller and executive management on special projects, strategic objectives, and process improvements for the accounting team and the company including providing ad hoc analysis to assist in decision making
- Assists the finance team, management, and various departments with budget and forecasting activities
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Proven experience as an Accounting Manager or other similar position with 7 years of overall experience; this will include experience managing a team of accounting professionals
- BA/BS degree in accounting, finance, or relevant field; CPA required
- Strong understanding of GAAP and relevant financial accounting regulations; FERC accounting experience preferred but not required
- Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes including general ledger close cycle, financial reporting, annual audits, and account reconciliations
- Strong understanding and application of data analysis tools and forecasting methodologies
- Exceptional MS Office capabilities, especially Excel, and complex accounting software systems experience (e.g., SAP or Oracle)
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Highly organized with an ability to prioritize and delegate effectively across multiple priority items
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to be both a player and coach for direct reports and with/for cross-functional teams; positive contributor to company culture
- Strong customer service and leadership mindset, with a focus on process improvement
- Experienced manager, developing individuals in high growth environment
- Utility and/or overall energy industry experience preferred but not required; in lieu of experience, some interest in the energy industry and the energy transition is helpful
