Summary:
The Educational Interpreter provides interpretation to students who are deaf/hard of hearing/
deafblind, who receive all or part of their education in mainstream educational settings. The
educational interpreter’s primary function is to facilitate communication between the deaf
student, their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other educational staff. Other job
requirements may include support (under the supervision of the classroom teacher or TOD), pre-teaching
signs and concepts related to unit vocabulary, and test reading. Educational Interpreters are support staff
members and are encouraged to participate in meetings with the student’s IEP team.
Qualifications:
• A degree from an interpreter training program, or an EIPA score of a 4.0 or greater
• Demonstration of sufficient linguistic fluency and cognitive flexibility to pass the V
screening process
• Advanced cultural knowledge of the Deaf community
• Use ethical judgment in making decisions in accordance with the NAIE code of professional
conduct
• Interpreters must have the knowledge and experience to pass the Educational Interpreter
Proficiency Assessment (EIPA) with a 4.0 or greater
• Ability to work in a fast-paced setting
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively and
independently
• Knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to bridge ethnic values, cultural beliefs and behaviors
• Ability to work with diverse populations from various cultural/economic backgrounds and age
groups
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Interpreting assignments can range from but are not limited to administrative meetings, student
and parent conferences, educational mainstreaming, in-services, mental health situations, IEP/
ISP meetings, guest lectures, field trips, performing arts, and formal ceremonies
• Maintain professional growth and certification
• Participate in all in-service and staff development activities, as appropriate
