Position Summary
Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) invites applications for the position of Assistant Director for Staff Development and Behavioral Intervention within the Department of Housing and Residence Life. This vital role provides leadership in the development of residential staff and ensures the effective management of student behavioral concerns within the residential community.

Staff Development and Training
  • Staff Recruitment and Selection: Assist in the recruitment, selection, and hiring process for residence life professional staff, Resident Assistants (RAs), Graduate Assistants (GAs), and other paraprofessional staff.
  • Training and Orientation: Design, implement, and facilitate comprehensive training programs for residence life professional staff, including onboarding for new staff and continuous professional development throughout the academic year.
  • Leadership Development: Provide ongoing mentorship and support to residence life staff, fostering leadership skills, teamwork, and personal development. Develop and implement training modules related to conflict resolution, crisis management, and community building.
  • Performance Management: Monitor staff performance, provide regular feedback, and assist in the evaluation process. Address staff concerns and performance issues in a timely and professional manner.


Behavioral Intervention and Conflict Resolution (40%)
  • Behavioral Intervention: Serve as a key point of contact for behavioral concerns within the residence halls, including but not limited to conflict resolution, violations of university policies, and incidents requiring intervention.
  • Case Management: Work closely with students involved in behavioral incidents, developing individualized plans to address issues, encourage positive behavioral change, and support students’ success. Collaborate with campus resources such as Counseling Services, Student Conduct, and Campus Police as needed.
  • Crisis Management: Respond to crisis situations within the residential community, providing immediate support and implementing appropriate interventions. Ensure proper documentation and follow-up of incidents and escalate cases as needed to higher administration.
  • Policy Enforcement: Ensure that all residence life policies are enforced fairly and consistently. Serve as a resource to students and staff for understanding policies and procedures and ensure that interventions are aligned with university values and standards.

Student Engagement and Community Building (10%)
  • Community Engagement: Work to build a positive residential community by developing programs and initiatives that foster inclusivity, engagement, and student success. Collaborate with Residence Education Coordinators and other residence life staff to create a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for students.
  • Student Support: Serve as a resource for students in need of support, offering guidance and connecting them with appropriate campus services.

Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
  • Collaborative Initiatives: Collaborate with other departments within Student Affairs and across campus to enhance the residential experience for students. Participate in committees and task forces related to student success, housing operations, and campus safety.
  • Departmental Support: Assist with administrative tasks within the Department of Housing and Residence Life, including maintaining records, preparing reports, and contributing to departmental strategic planning.

Normal Work Schedule
Monday through Friday – 9:00am until 6:00pm.

These hours are subject to change based on departmental needs, training sessions, and crisis management situations.

Department Required Skills
Department Qualifications:
  • Experience in a supervisory role within a university housing or residence life department.
  • Familiarity with student conduct processes, behavioral intervention strategies, and crisis management protocols.
  • Experience in integrating academic initiatives with residential life programming.
  • Proficiency in student engagement software and technology systems.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 3-5 years of experience in student affairs or housing and residence life, with a focus on staff development, behavioral intervention, and conflict resolution.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong leadership, mentoring, and coaching abilities.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to address complex issues with tact and professionalism.
    • Experience in crisis management, behavioral intervention, and conflict resolution.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, staff, and faculty.
    • Knowledge of student development theory and best practices in residential life.
    • Familiarity with FERPA, Title IX, and other relevant policies and regulations.
