Wiregrass Ecological Associates (WEA) is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time forester position in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This position will manage clients, projects, and contractors, implement forestry and ecology work, and the shared stewardship goals of our partner National Deer Association (NDA) in the region.  This position will require candidates to oversee existing projects through their life cycle while coordinating with various stakeholders and landowners, especially the United States Forest Service (USFS). Intrinsically motivated individuals, with excellent analytical skills that are flexible and adaptive to change, and function well in a team-oriented group, are successful in this position.

Primary Duties :

  • Prepare and negotiate WEA standard contracts with independent contractors, contractor supervision and quality assurance, and certifying completion of work for payment.
  • Perform and oversee timber inventory / cruising, marking, and layout for appraisals, timber sales, and USFS Common Stand Exams (CSEs).
  • Perform all aspects of timber sale development and administration, including boundary establishment, preparing timber sale bid notices, marketing, reviewing timber sale contracts, and general sale oversight including merchandising logs into various forest products.
  • Direct planning, contractor negotiations, administration, and inspection of silviculture activities including manual and mechanical mastication, site preparations, reforestation, non-native invasive treatments, road work, and wildlife opening creations.
  • Assist in identifying and developing the scope for stewardship and conservation projects on Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests and other projects which occur across various land ownerships and land uses.
  • Flexibility to travel (sometimes extended or frequent) to other parts of the US to assist foresters and biologists in the completion of their projects, cross training skill development, and information exchanges within a team-oriented group.
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly administrative and financial obligation actions including invoicing and reporting efforts, including identifying and executing necessary amendments, for contracts and stewardship work.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in forestry and / or wildlife ecology from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 3 years of practical forestry experience is preferred.
  • An understanding of northern hardwood and mixed conifer forestry and silviculture, conservation implementation, habitat management, and wildlife biology desired.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the flora, fauna, and forested ecosystems of the Western and Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan ecoregions, is preferred.
  • Experience working with National Deer Association and / or the United States Forest Service is preferred.
  • Applicants must be self-motivated, responsible, and have the ability to solve problems. The position requires excellent organizational skills, the capability to work independently with little direct supervision, networking and communication skills, and project management experience.
  • Applicant must have a valid driver's license and experience using and operating common forestry field equipment and ATVs.
  • Familiarity with common forest technology applications is expected (ArcGIS, Microsoft Office, timber cruising applications, etc.).
  • Candidates must be capable of performing field work under difficult conditions including heat, cold, humidity, rain, snow, ice, flooding, biting insects, dangerous wildlife, and heavy brush. Candidates must be capable of hiking up to 10 miles per day in rough terrain and carrying backpack loads up to 35 lbs.
