Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Cost Accountant to join our accounting team at Wisconsin Built, a custom casework and fixture manufacturer. The Cost Accountant will play a critical role in tracking and analyzing the costs associated with production. This includes material costs, labor costs, overhead, and other production-related expenses. The ideal candidate will have experience applying cost accounting principles in a manufacturing environment and the ability and desire to collaborate with operations to drive cost-efficiency and profitability.
Your expertise will support cost control, pricing strategies, and profitability analysis to ensure the company’s manufacturing operations are efficient and cost-effective.
Key Responsibilities:
- Job Cost Reporting: Monitor and analyze direct materials, direct labor, and manufacturing overhead costs. Ensure accurate cost allocation and tracking. Prepare regular cost reports including profitability analysis by job, customer, segment, etc.
- Variance Analysis: Perform regular analysis of cost variances (e.g., material, labor, overhead) and provide management with actionable insights on cost savings, production inefficiencies, and cost control measures.
- Standard Costing: Develop, maintain, and update standard costs including raw material pricing, labor costs, and overhead allocation. Provide recommendations for updates and lead the annual standard cost update process.
- Month-End Closing: Support the month-end and year-end closing processes by ensuring all cost-related transactions are accurately recorded and reported in a timely manner.
- Cost Reduction Initiatives: Collaborate with the operations and production teams to identify areas of improvement in manufacturing processes and recommend cost-reduction strategies.
- Inventory Management: Support the Material Manager in ensuring the accuracy of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods inventory through cycle counting and annual physical inventory. Provide detailed analysis of variances and identify root causes for corrective action.
- Compliance & Internal Controls: Ensure compliance with internal accounting policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. Help maintain strong internal controls for cost tracking and reporting processes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA, CMA, or similar certification is a plus).
- Minimum of 3 years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably within cabinetry or similar industries (e.g., furniture manufacturing, woodworking).
- Strong knowledge of cost accounting principles, production processes, and financial reporting.
- Proficiency with accounting software (ERP) and advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.).
- Experience with inventory management systems and cost analysis tools.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost savings.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams (e.g., production, purchasing, pricing).
- High attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and cost-reduction strategies in production environments.
- Familiarity with cabinet manufacturing processes, including material sourcing, cutting, assembly, and finishing techniques.
- Experience in implementing and optimizing ERP systems for cost tracking and reporting.
