Location: US:WI:MILWAUKEE at our WI DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORIES facility.

Shift: 1st shift (8:00 am - 4:30 pm; Monday - Friday with on-call weekend rotations)
Summary:
To assist Pathologists and Pathology Residents with autopsy procedures.
Responsibilities:
1. As directed by the Autopsy Section Director, performs post-mortem evisceration per post-mortem protocol. Based on established department procedures, timely and accurately performs preparatory and concluding procedures directly related to autopsies, including patient weights and measurements, obtaining tissue, blood and fluid cultures for lab testing. Acquires all necessary paperwork and medical record information. Lays out all surgical instruments and lab supplies for autopsy procedure. Washes tables, trays and floor and all instrumentation used. Restocks cleaned instruments and supplies.
2. On a daily basis, organizes and maintains files, logs, and records related to autopsy procedures, body releases, temperatures and autopsy turnaround times. On a regular basis, consistently follows department procedures to maintain the morgue cooler, the autopsy stockroom and the tissue supply room, including inventorying the areas, restocking with on-hand supplies, communicating supply needs to department manager, and disposing of outdated tissues by the established deadlines. Cleans and maintains the morgue and surrounding work areas according to accepted standards of safety and cleanliness.
3. On a weekly basis, or as needed, in an accurate and timely fashion, prepares for pathology conferences. Sets up room, table with instrumentation, specimens and necessary paperwork. Following the conclusion of the conference, performs all follow-up activities relating to the specimens, instruments, and clean-up.
4. In a timely manner, retrieves patient charts from Hospital Medical Records for autopsies. * In a professional and responsive customer service manner, appropriately responds to all pages and inquiries, and follows through on inquiries, requests, and complaints. Shares information and ideas with others and utilizes good listening skills. Keeps manager informed of any concerns or problems.
5. Maintains instruments and equipment according to established protocols. Correctly operates instruments and equipment for intended purpose. Monitors and documents instrument and equipment performance utilizing the laboratory QA/QC program and recognizes malfunctions and the need for repairs.
6. Participates in and successfully completes all competency assessments/challenges specific to this position. Records documenting and substantiating competency and/or improvement plans are maintained by the specific department.
7. Coordinates processes in the slide and block storage archives. Maintains tissue and specimen files. Actively participates in training WDL and MCW personnel in proper procedures for slide & block extraction and refiling as needed. Collects, packages and ships older materials for archiving with Iron Mountain. Coordinates processes with Iron Mountain for older specimen retrieval and return.
8. Owns and maintains internal morgue procedures. In coordination with the morgue manager and supervisor, writes new procedures as necessary to maintain operations, encompass new processes and accommodate changes in regulations.
9. Acts as SME for technical issues related to the morgue. Coordinates LIS needs with Beaker and other I.T. personnel as needed for data systems.
10. Maintains knowledge and awareness of CAP guideline related to autopsy services. Under direction and approval of leadership, modifies written procedures as required to maintain regulatory compliance.
11. Monitors for safety and compliance in the morgue area. Coordinates disposition of remains with security, regional funeral homes and medical examiner’s offices. Coordinates with transport and spiritual services to assure proper care and handling of decedents and fetal remains within the hospital campus. Alerts manager and medical director in a timely manner when unsafe conditions occur.
12. Receives inquiries from families of decedents and offers appropriate direction for funerary arrangements and disposition of remains. Maintains communication and coordinates family care with spiritual services and the bereavement office.
13. Inspects legal requests for autopsy for compliance and completeness. Coordinates correction when required with the autopsy medical director and hospital staff. Assures regulatory compliance with autopsy. Communicates with the medical examiner’s office to resolve questions regarding legal and medical autopsy. Informs autopsy medical director when guidance is required.
14. Coordinates with research and donation organizations for gift of remains and donation of organs. Performs brain removal and dissection for neurologic studies organizations.
15. Maintains overflow facilities in times of pandemic, mass casualties and high population. Coordinates distribution of overflow decedents to maintain autopsy services. Assists with high risk and infectious autopsies as requested.
Qualifications:
1. Minimum of an Associate's Degree in funeral/mortuary science or Bachelor's degree in a science field, such as Biology.
2. One year or more of former autopsy or related work experience, such as in the military or embalming at a funeral home preferred.
3. Working knowledge of gross anatomy.
4. Good computer (Excel, Word, Access) and basic photography skills.
5. Good communication and customer service skills.
6. Certification from an accredited school of Mortuary Science and Wisconsin State Licensure as a Funeral Director desirable.
