The Floor Controller role is responsible for assisting with the governance and policing of Data Centre floors. The job holder will assist with the management of delivering power, cooling, space associated with the installation of hardware as per the agreed location, they will facilitate the installation and decommissioning of all hardware within the Data Center floors. Liaise with internal stakeholders to ensure customer expectations are met. Floor Controller role will be responsible for inward/outward of materials, manage stock control, performing floor audits and provide management with effective MI. The job holder will be part of the wider team out of hour's call-out rotor in order to provide vendor escorts into the Data Center space.
Impact on the Business / Function
- To ensure correct installation, change, move or demise process and procedure is followed always and quality maintained to provide the best service possible to both internal and external customers.
- Identifies solutions to problems and mitigates risk based on sound judgment
- To assist in the evaluation of technical products and solutions in support of the technical strategy. This incorporates hardware, software and infrastructure products used in both a mainframe and office environment.
- To undertake the build and testing of hardware and software components. This incorporates all system components and inter-connectivity both internally and to other platforms
- To undertake problem investigation and recovery.
- Point of contact for all installations, moves, changes and demises within data centre(s)
- Audits, Disposals of hardware, environment of computer room and Data centre's, occasional stakeholder and relationship management, utility (space, power, cooling etc) sustainability.
- Aperture data integrity
- Stock Management, inward/outward management of equipment and materials
- Physical "policing" of data hall standards
Customers / Stakeholders
- Day to day liaison with physical and IT security, mechanical and electrical engineering, cabling teams and installation teams.
- To liaise and co-ordinate with other technicians within ITID, Development and external suppliers to ensure delivery of specified services, projects and tasks.
Leadership & Teamwork
- Lead and provide guidance on technical projects and share expertise within a technical forum and a non-technical audience, using expert knowledge of the Data Centres and its capabilities.
- Produce schedules and plans for successful delivery of projects, demonstrate progress and highlight risk or deviation through engagement and clear dialogue with management and key stakeholders
- Demonstrate effective teamwork and harmonious team environment
- Undertake the activities assigned by management and Technical Specialists.
Operational Effectiveness & Control
- Ensure compliance with all relevant internal instructions (FIMs, GSMs, circulars) and external regulatory requirements, including the management of operational risk and adherence to the Clients standards of ethical behavior.
- Ensure policy, procedures and standards of conduct are understood and appropriately implemented
- Adherence of all standards, process and procedures within data centre(s)
- Demonstrates and improves process by continuously reviewing for efficiency and introducing change to enhance procedure
Required skills
- Installation, migration and demise of IT equipment within Data Centres (To 5 years)
- Understanding of underpinning M&E relating to critical facilities (UPS, generators, RPPs etc)
- Awareness of service management techniques including Problem, Change and Incident management
- Understanding of data network and cabling technologies, principles and products
- Working knowledge of Aperture, CMS and GSD
- General overview as to how a computer room floor is laid out and how modern server, storage and network infrastructure is integrated.
- Demonstrated ability to rapidly build relationships with key stakeholders
- An awareness of IT hardware, software, operations and networks.
- A track record of overseeing delivery of complex programmes and projects;
- Proven technical awareness in an IT role
- Awareness of risk management
- Have an excellent knowledge of the project lifecycle
- Be able to enforce the quality policies and processes.
- PC / Office skills (ServiceNOW Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc)
- Data Centres are major sites which include highly sensitive and critical data processing areas, office areas and complex engineering systems.
- The job holder ensures that the floor management teams maintain essential data centre floor environmental and technical standard conditions at all times and make fast and accurate assessments of issues without reference to line management.
- The importance of the services supported by the Data Centres dictates that the work undertaken within the processing areas is performed under relevant change control procedures as required and is managed to reduce the risk of any Impact to the business. It is crucial that works in these areas is completed in a proficient manner, which contributes to maintaining the Integrity of services at all times.
