What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Director, Career Preparation & External Partnerships position at Wittenberg University?
The Associate Director will build relationships with alumni, employers, parents, graduate schools, and friends of the University to connect students to jobs and opportunities that prepare them for life after Wittenberg. This person will also coach/advise students throughout their time at Wittenberg so that students are armed with career-ready skills that make them competitive in graduate school and the workforce. This role will function as a member of the Career Engagement team, working closely with the Assistant Director of Campus Engagement/Experiential Learning and Assistant Director of Career Operations/Student Employment. This is a full-time, exempt-level position reporting to the Interim Dean of Student Engagement.
Responsibilities
External Partnerships
- Lead the Career Engagement team in managing external partnerships. Establish strategies and goals that will ensure success in these efforts.
- Collaborate with Admission and Advancement/Alumni Relations, and other appropriate internal offices/areas to connect with alumni, parents, and friends of the University who are interested in providing avenues for mentorship, professional development, internships and job opportunities.
- Lead the Career Engagement team in building strong relationships with the many alumni leadership, affinity, identity, and regionally-based alumni groups (i.e. the Alumni Board, CBS Legacy Society, etc.)
- Working with the Career Engagement team, provide useful, accurate, and timely data and career outcomes to constituents.
- Engage employers, graduate school admissions officers and other friends of Wittenberg to create opportunities for Wittenberg students.
- Establish new and maintain employer recruiter contacts; strengthen current contacts through outreach activities such as cold calls, mass mailings, individual employer visits, and participation in partnership activities.
- Serve as a liaison between external employer partners and campus partners.
Career Preparation
- Support the Assistant Director of Campus Engagement/Experiential Learning in executing relevant on campus career and vocational development opportunities such as workshops, presentations, internship/job/grad school fairs or other engagement experiences; leading the assessment.
- Advise students and recent alumni on resumes, cover letters, mock interviews, overall career guidance, job and internship searches, and experiential learning opportunities.
Operations
- Managing the Career Engagement budget with the Assistant Director of Student Employment and Career Exploration. Manage the electronic employer database and reports.
- Participate in appropriate staff development opportunities; serve on campus, community, and professional association committees; appropriately keep supervisors abreast of matters sensitive in nature.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, etc.
Qualifications
- A master's degree with 3 - 5 years' experience in career advising, higher education, business or a related field is required.
- Experience working with Handshake platforms is preferred.
- Demonstrated success on a team.

- Strong written, public speaking and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to give polished and professional presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to have a positive outlook.
- Demonstrated success delivering career or professional development advice.

- Belief in the fundamental value of a residential, liberal arts education and its application to life after college.
- Ability to work nights and weekends as necessary.
- Competency and experience using Microsoft Office software, specifically proficient in the use of Excel, Publisher, Outlook, and PowerPoint with the ability and desire to learn additional software applications as necessary.
- Night and weekend work and regular travel will be required depending on campus events and needs.
- Frequently utilizes computer for extended periods (up to 50% of the work day).
- A valid driver's license is required; must meet required insurance qualifications found in Wittenberg Motor Pool policies and procedures. If license is from out of state, successful candidate will need to obtain a valid Ohio driver's license within 30 days of hire date.
