Overview

The department of Medicine at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) is hiring faculty for the division of Infectious Diseases. Applicants with interests in ambulatory and inpatient clinical infectious diseases, teaching medical students and residents, and at all faculty ranks will be considered. There are also opportunities and resources to support clinical, laboratory, and educational research. The division has plans to start an accredited infectious disease fellowship program within the next 2 years. Leadership opportunities within the division and/or department is available for candidates with experience and track record of academic achievement and leadership. Interested faculty candidates without prior experience but interested in future leadership opportunities could be groomed internally for future leadership roles within the institution. There are also opportunities for applicants who are dually board-certified in adult and pediatric infectious diseases.

Responsibilities

Division faculty provide a broad range of inpatient and ambulatory clinical services as well as resident and medical student education. Faculty members provide inpatient consultations (with no admissions to Division faculty) at Ascension Borgess Medical Center and Bronson Methodist Hospital, in addition to outpatient clinics. New faculty are expected to spend approximately two-thirds of their time with clinical and teaching responsibilities, with one-third for academic and scholarly pursuits. Call is shared with the division physicians, with one weekend of call per month. There are substantial opportunities for developing clinical research in collaboration with the medical school Center for Clinical Research, academic pursuits, and expanding clinical services based on candidate sub-specialty training and career interests. One current member of the division is dually board-certified in adult and pediatric infectious diseases.

 

Further information includes:

  • Broad general infectious disease practice with opportunities to expand clinical services, such as hepatitis C treatment clinic.
  • Inpatient ID service provides consultations only, with no direct admissions to the ID service.
  • Outpatient clinic at state-of-the-art facilities.
  • Shared call rotation and up to 7 weeks of PTO annually.
  • Two-thirds to three-fourth of time spent on clinical and teaching responsibilities, and rest is available for academic and scholarly pursuits.
  • Large state-of-the-art Simulation Center and Innovation center.
  • Established Center for Clinical Research allows opportunities and resources for developing clinical research programs.

Qualifications

  • Board certification or board eligibility. 
  • Completion of Infectious Disease Fellowship.
  • Eligibility for Michigan medical license.
  • Dedicated commitment to providing a quality educational experience for residents and medical students.
  • Applicants should be highly motivated to pursue a career in academic Infectious Diseases with experience in medical education, and ideally with a track record of success in clinical research or other scholarly activities. Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with credentials and experience.

WMed is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Higher Learning Commission. The medical school offers a comprehensive, innovative four-year Doctor of Medicine degree program and two Master of Science degree programs in Biomedical Sciences and Medical Engineering. We train physicians in 10 residencies and five fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. To support our educational mission, we have Joint Accreditation for interprofessional continuing education, which incorporates accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

 

WMed Health is the clinical practice of the medical school with more than 300 providers offering comprehensive primary care and specialty services in several locations throughout Kalamazoo, Portage, and Battle Creek. The Department of Pathology faculty serve as the Office of the Medical Examiner for counties throughout Michigan and northern Indiana.

 

The W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus located in downtown Kalamazoo serves as the primary educational facility with faculty and administrative offices, student study and social spaces, team-based learning halls, a state-of-the-art Simulation Center accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, basic science research labs, as well as toxicology and forensic pathology labs.

 

WMed is building upon Kalamazoo’s century-long foundation of drug discovery and medical device development with a strategic investment in clinical, laboratory, community, and educational research. The Center for Immunobiology, Center for Clinical Research, Research Histology Lab, Innovation Center, and Human Research Protection Program contribute to the medical school’s advancement of knowledge through innovation and discovery.
