Job Summary:
The Assistant Fleet Manager is responsible for supervising fleet maintenance operations, leading fleet technicians, and ensuring safe, efficient, and productive maintenance services for internal customers. This position serves as the acting Fleet Manager in their absence and works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned staff, handling concerns, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and conducting performance appraisals.
- Oversee daily operations of the Fleet Management division.
- Perform mechanical duties as needed.
- Maintain professional competence through continued education and training.
- Provide guidance and consultation within area of expertise.
- Coordinate and assign work, establish schedules, maintain standards, and inspect completed work.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and shop.
- Review driver repair requests and maintenance work, preparing work orders.
- Assist with payroll records and timekeeping.
- Monitor inventory levels and coordinate with the Inventory Coordinator.
- Assist the Fleet Manager in record-keeping, obtaining estimates, scheduling repairs, and preparing reports.
- Respond to emergency maintenance calls.
- Ensure compliance with policies and safety regulations.
- Serve as the primary contact for equipment operators and drivers.
- Generate and submit necessary reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED, or completion of a vocational training program in automotive or heavy equipment mechanics.
- Four (4) years of experience in vehicle and equipment repair, service, and maintenance, including managerial or supervisory experience.
- Valid Class A or B commercial driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Master ASE Certification for Heavy Duty Trucks and Master ASE Certification for Light Duty Vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Underground Storage Tank Operator's Certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Expertise in heavy-duty truck engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, brakes, HVAC systems, transmissions, and hydraulics.
- Ability to operate and maintain relevant tools and equipment.
- Proficiency in Fleet Maintenance software and report generation.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and foster a productive work environment.
- Capacity to exercise independent judgment and adapt to workload variations.
- Ability to provide own tools as required.
Physical Demands:
- Requires frequent physical activity, including walking, standing, stooping, lifting, and pushing objects up to 75 pounds.
Work Environment:
- Exposure to bright/dim light, dust, extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, fumes, moving machinery, electrical hazards, and traffic.
Work Hours:
- Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM (May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.)
Safety and Emergency Management Responsibilities:
- Employees must comply with safety policies, wear required personal protective equipment, and report hazards or injuries immediately.
- During emergencies, all City employees may be required to perform emergency service duties.
