Weekly Mine Examiner
JOB LOCATION: Canyon Fuel Company - Skyline Mine
Position Summary:
The Weekly Mine Examiner plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with federal and state mining laws, identifying potential hazards, and helping maintain a safe working environment underground. Will conduct comprehensive weekly examinations of designated working and travel areas and documents findings in accordance with MSHA requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct weekly examinations of active and inactive areas, return airways, belt entries, escapeways, seals, and other required locations as mandated by MSHA and company policy.
- Identify and document hazardous conditions including, but not limited to, roof conditions, ventilation issues, accumulations of combustible materials, and equipment malfunctions.
- Maintain accurate and timely examination records, including corrective actions taken, using company-approved documentation methods.
- Communicate hazardous conditions immediately to the Mine Foreman or Safety Superintendent.
- Ensure required postings and signage are present and legible in all required areas.
- Monitor compliance with ventilation plans, roof control plans, and other required mine plans.
- Collaborate with operations personnel to facilitate prompt hazard mitigation.
- Uphold and promote a strong safety culture across all areas of mine.
- Assist with audits, inspections, and other safety-related activities as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must hold a current MSHA Mine Foreman Certification (Utah or reciprocal state accepted).
- Must be able to communicate hazards immediately to the responsible person (shift coordinator) and the Mine foreman or safety department.
- Minimum of 4 years of underground coal mining experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of MSHA regulations, state mining laws, and mine ventilation systems.
- Prior experience as a certified Mine Examiner in an underground coal operation.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent documentation skills.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to lead, by example, in safety practices.
- Capable of walking long distances, navigating rugged terrain, and working in confined underground environments.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Basic computer skills for logging reports and data entry.
